Mickey Wallis: This is evidence alone that our spinners are just not up to it on a regular basis on the world stage. I know Bess got a 5-fer in the first Test, but he’s actually just bowled right-arm pudding pretty much all series and has only got wickets from batting errors.

When James Anderson dismissed Angelo Mathews in his first over and Mark Wood saw off Ramesh Mendis for a duck soon after, England were well in command.

Sri Lanka were 243-6 and England sensed a chance to roll their hosts over.

Instead, Niroshan Dickwella and Dilruwan Perera have batted excellently for their partnership of 70.

A first Test century will be on Dickwella's mind as he munches on his lunch.

Dickwella has looked splendid today, and has put away all the impetuous shots.

After losing two early wickets, that has turned into a very good session for Sri Lanka, thanks to an unbeaten 70-run stand between Niroshan Dickwella and Dilruwan Perera.

This will be the last over before lunch, and it'll be Sam Curran to bowl it.

The left-armer, from round the wicket with the ball angled into his ribs, seems to have got Dickwella going. He's trying to hit every short ball.

Sam Curran appears to be trying some short ball theory, and Niroshan Dickwella awkwardly hoicks him over square leg for a couple of runs.

Dickwella goes after another short ball, losing all shape, but he manages to hustle the ball over Jos Buttler's head and away for four. He's determined to take it on...

Jim Smith: It's spells like this where you realise what a big hole in this team Stokes leaves when not there. Moeen as well. Both bring so much more balance to our side. no pressure on the batsmen once Jimmy/Wood are off.
