England captain Joe Root talking on Channel Four: “It was a very special day. The guys organised a surprise for me last night and Ben [Stokes] in particular said some really nice things. It’s a really impressive start but it’s a just start. We’ve got to back it up tomorrow but it’s pleasing.
“I’ve looked at a few things technically and mentally over lockdown and it’s really benefited me. You’ve always got to evolve as a player and I’m sure there will be more challenges in the future that I’ll need to overcome. I’m happy with how things are going so I need to cash in.
“We need to make best use of the pitch because it could be a crucial toss. Hopefully we can really make it count. We’ve got to at least match it tomorrow and get a big first-innings lead.
“The pitch played a lot better than it looked. It’s an ugly one and it perhaps came on a bit slow but it’s important if two guys get in they make the most of it and make a big partnership.”

That wicket has taken some gloss off the day for England but ultimately that is still there day and they are in a great position to post a big first-innings score and apply pressure for the rest of the game.
That will also be close for the day.
Virat Kohli gives Joe Root a well deserved pat on the back.
Sibley lbw b Bumrah 87 (Eng 263-3)
Ah, Dom.
It’s smashing into the base of leg stump and unfortunately that’s the end of Sibley’s 285-ball stay and a superb 200-run partnership between the opener and Joe Root.
There’s definitely no bat.
Oh no, no, no! Jasprit Bumrah’s lethal yorkers have finally got him and India a breakthrough.
Dom Sibley reluctantly reviews but I think this is out.
The on-field decision is out.
A single apiece for Joe Root and Dom Sibley.
That’s the 200-run partnership now too. They’ve scored the last 100 in just 25 overs. Superb.
One over to go.
Dom Sibley plays out a maiden from Jasprit Bumrah.
Joe Root will get the headlines today, because he’s been superb, and it’s his 100th Test but Sibley has played an absolutely superb hand.
Virat Kohli turns to Ravi Ashwin again. I don’t know if he thinks this is his best chance of getting a wicket or if he just wants to get off for the day. India have been a bit sloppy in truth.
Oh wow! Where has that come from? Joe Root gets down on one knee and slog-sweeps Ravi Ashwin for six.
He’s down on the floor now, though. He’s really starting to struggle with cramp.
Him and Virat have a laugh, before the India skipper helps him try and stretch it out.
Three more overs to go, Joe. Dig in.
Root picks up another single with yet another back-foot drive. Does anyone play that shot as well as him? Four overs left in the day now. These two need to see it through.
Joe Root is struggling with some sort of injury here. I think it’s just cramp, but he pulled up a bit short for a run a few overs now and he’s hopping around in the crease after blocking the ball back down the pitch.
He picks up a single to get down to the non-striker’s end – that may be the best place for him right now.
Dom Sibley blocks out a maiden from Ishant Sharma.
He’s been there all day and faced 267 balls. He’s not going to throw this away lightly.
Ooh that’s a good delivery from Jasprit Bumrah as he has Joe Root groping at one outside off stump.
And again! Superb from Bumrah. If you weren’t with us at 4am this morning, first of all why? And secondly this is Bumrah’s first Test in India – his first 17 caps all came away from home.
This partnership is worth 186 now. I said when it reached 100 England would want it to make 200 and Root and Dom Sibley are so close now. That was in the 64th over too so England’s game plan of digging in, and finding runs easier to come by later in the day, has been executed perfectly.
Now Virat Kohli takes the new ball. Odd.
Watching Joe Root when he’s in this form is just sensational. He looks so balanced at the crease as he plays another beautiful drive through the covers.
I wonder if he has been using the same bat for all three of these successive centuries? If he has been he must never want it to break.
Apart from that one outside edge, that fell just short of Rishabh Pant, just after tea, it has been another chanceless innings.
The second new ball is now due but Virat Kohli decides against taking it for the time being. I wonder why. Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma have bowled 27 overs between them now so maybe they are a bit weary.
Seven runs off Ravi Ashwin’s latest over. England are cruising. If they get to close two down this is absolutely their day.
Root is quick on his feet to drive Washington Sundar for four through the off side. Balletic.
What a day this has been for England. Just a single in this over for Root, who is beaming with pride.
