Joe Root has been given out lbw.

He reviews immediately. He's motioned that he thinks it's going down.

    Umpire's call is out remember.

England's James Vince has passed 50 for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash final.

He was involved in a shambolic run-out of fellow opener Josh Philippe early on but has 55 from 37 balls.

The Sixers are 87-2 against Perth Scorchers at the halfway stage. You can listen to commentary here if you wish.

You've got to be careful with Ashwin - he's a bowler you have to play straight to. He's like Anil Kumble in that he's good at bowling variations which skid on. If you start trying to work the ball to mid-wicket too early, you get in trouble.

Buttler is almost gone first ball as he looks to drive out of the rough but gets a leading edge that almost loops to Shubman Gill who was diving forward at short mid-wicket.

Hopefully that's a one off. England can't afford to throw this away and it become a 520 all out.

It looked like it just skidded on a bit. Clever, beautiful bowling. It's not a doosra or carrom ball but it's a legitimate variation and Pope would have seen - and played - that as an off-spinner.

Jos Buttler, who is playing in his 50th Test this week, is the new batsman.

That landmark has been overshaded somewhat by Root reaching 100 but Buttler has become a very important part of this Test team.

    Pope lbw b Ashwin 34 (Eng 473-5)

That is plumb. And when I say plumb, I mean stone dead.

Pope, who had looked a bit more like his busy self post-Tea, plays as if he expects the ball to spin but it just goes on straight and hits on the back leg, bang in front of the stumps.

A scratchy return to Test cricket for Pope.

Joe Root has now overtaken Alec Stewart in the top Test run scorers for England. He's now third in the list, behind just Graham Gooch and Sir Alastair Cook.

Root has overtaken Geoffrey Boycott, Kevin Pietersen, David Gower and Stewart in 2021 already.

He's only 426 behind Gooch now. Could he overtaken him in this series?

The Jasprit Bumrah experiment is over - with the third new ball just nine overs away - and Shahbaz Nadeem is back on.

This is the 11th day of England's Test cricket year. How many of those days has Root been batting for?!

Hahaha this is brilliant from Rishabh Pant.

Ollie Pope tries to sweep a delivery and gets a top edge and Pant moves forward, looks up, arms aloft, and keeps moving his head, looking for the ball.

It's behind you, mate. The ball had actually looped over him and the leg slip and away for a couple of runs.

When it's not going your way and all that...

Bumrah has such an upright action that you're dragged into playing outside the off stump when you don't want to. Pope was drawn into playing a shot that he probably wouldn't play against anyone else.

He's one of those bowlers who you need to get used to playing a bit before you know how to.

    Root 214, Pope 29

Streaky from Ollie Pope as he plays a booming drive but the ball flies between the gap in the slip cordon and away for four.

This is the first Test Pope has played in since having shoulder surgery for the second time in late August. I spoke to him during his recovery about comparisons to Ian Bell, England's "big dogs" and the three things he'll definitely have with him in the bubble.

There's nothing wrong with a shameless plug so check it out.

Just a single for Joe Root in that over.

England will probably be pretty content to just try and keep Bumrah and Ashwin at bay and then capitalise when Shahbaz Nadeem and Washington Sundar come on. They've done that superbly so far.

The no-ball klaxon is blaring again - India have bowled 15 now. Pack. It. In. That's at least 10 too many.

The red soil is becoming more and more apparent at both ends of the wicket now. That's going to help make it spin when it is England's turn to bowl.

Joe Root is straight back into focus post tea, playing a lovely cut through the covers for a couple, before keeping the strike in identical fashion.
