  • First Test, day three, Chennai

  1. Ind 20-1published at 4 overs

Pujara gets off the mark straight away, riding the bounce from Archer, and dropping it just off the square.

That wicket-taking delivery was superb from Archer. It was back of a length, with a little bit of movement away off the seam, and the extra bounce just enticed Rohit Sharma into playing.

Archer looks pumped. His pace is already up around the 90mph mark.

Cheteshwar Pujara is the new man. As I said before the innings his average against pace is a lot lower than against spin so it was crucial England got him in early.

They've got a leg gully in for him already.

GOT 'IMMMM! Superb start from Jofra Archer and England!

That is brilliant from Jofra Archer. It is the perfect line and length from the England quick, and he tempts Rohit into playing a delivery he can leave alone and Jos Buttler takes a healthy nick.

Exactly the start the tourists needed.

  4. Ind 19-0published at 3.2 overs

Jofra Archer tempts Rohit Sharma into a little fish and earns a nod of approval.

Rohit responds with a glorious flick to the square-leg fence.

  5. Ind 15-0published at 3 overs

Good from James Anderson, testing Shubman Gill's technique on off stump, but the Indian opener gives him a little stare back, almost as if to say "you're going to do better than that".

    The England slip cordon applaud.

  6. Ind 15-0published at 2.3 overs

This is the first time I've seen Shubman Gill and he looks a serious talent.

He stands motionless and on-drives James Anderson for a glorious four. Superb shot.

Restrict the Indians to their averages and they are all out for 350. Make them follow on... Repeat... England need 120 to win... easy. 1-0.

  8. Ind 10-0published at 2 overs

    Gill 9, Rohit 1

Shubman Gill, who is playing in only his fourth Test, picks up a couple of twos, with a nice drive through the covers and a flick through mid-wicket.

Gill doesn't have a sponsor on his bat. He's just got a solid piece of timber in his hand. Number 11-esque.

Better from Jofra Archer as he tempts Gill into a tentative prod. There was a puff of dust from the pitch too.

Gill responds well with an emphatic pull for four.

Jofra Archer will share the new ball.

This is his first Test since August, and his first cricket of any sort since a Twenty20 in South Africa in December.

  11. Ind 2-0published at 1 over

Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill are both off the mark.

James Anderson isn't too impressed with his start as he sends a couple down the leg side. He takes a deep inward breath before exhaling.

Better to end the over, testing Rohit's defensive technique on off-stump.

Matt Dawson: If England can just nick a couple of wickets early on, it would really set the tone for the rest of this Test. That Indian middle order is scarily good though.

  13. Postpublished at 04:53 Greenwich Mean Time 7 February 2021

The players are back out in the middle and James Anderson has the new cherry.

He's taken 26 wickets at an average of 33.46 in India.

The TV coverage have just put a graphic up.

Cheteshwar Pujara averages 159.90 against left-arm spin and 67.08 against off spin. It's down to a measly 34.67 against pace.

James Anderson, Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes may have to get him out.

It is not going to be easy for England. Just look at those averages...

For comparison Joe Root is the only player in the England team to average above 40.

If we'd offered you 578 and 190.1 overs at 04:00 GMT on Friday morning you'd have taken that wouldn't you?

Can England get early breakthroughs and put pressure on an extremely talented India middle order now?

Anderson b Ashwin 1 (Eng 578 all out)

But all good things come to an end.

James Anderson decides he's had enough so attempts a slog sweep, but misses, and the ball crashes into middle stump.

What a performance from England, though.

  18. Eng 578-9published at 190 overs

Just the bye off the over.

England have been out there 40 minutes already this morning.

  19. Eng 578-9published at 189.2 overs

    More good running from England.

Rishabh Pant fumbles a leg-side bouncer and James Anderson and Jack Leach scurry through for a single.

Bumrah has bowled more bouncers this morning than in the whole Test.

  20. Eng 577-9published at 189 overs

James Anderson gets off the mark with a single down to long-off.

Do you really need a long-off to the number 11? I highly doubt Anderson is going in to out and hitting Ravichandran Ashwin over the top.
