Only a slip and a gully for Stokes as he faces Ashwin. He's happy to sweep. Two singles from the over. I wonder how many overs Mohammed Siraj will bowl in this match.

  3. Another Bangladesh v West Indies thriller?published at 06:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2021

We could have another cracker in store in Mirpur, where West Indies have been bowled out for 117 in their second innings of the second Test.

That leaves Bangladesh chasing 231 to draw the series, with more than four sessions left.

Given that West Indies pulled off a remarkable pursuit of 395 to win the opening Test last week, who's ruling it out...?

Everything is happening on fast forward. Indian spinners whipping through overs, not giving England a moment to breathe. Something is happening every delivery. Danger, a shot, Indian chatter.

Virat Kohli was getting properly stuck into Dan Lawrence in the first session. He was saying he had no idea how to deal with the ball. Not only are England dealing with a ball that is ragging square but the intimidation factor as well.

    But India did have Rohit.

Ollie Pope has made his intentions clear. A top-edged sweep at Ashwin only falls short of deep square through luck, rather than judgement.

Dave Hill: 8 wickets in a sessions isn’t normal. Without Rohit India would’ve only managed about 170. Diabolical pitch.

Joe Thomson: A greentop will remain fairly even throughout a Test. Problem with a rank turner on day 1/2 is that it's only going to get worse.

I suppose my question on the pitch would be this...

If England had won the toss, would they be in as a strong a position as India are now?

I'm not blaming England. They are in very unfamiliar conditions. It's more do they have the bowlers to exploit and the batsmen to score runs when it turns like this? Probably not.

I am sure Axar Patel is a very nice chap. He looks a decent steady left-arm bowler. The fact he puts no revolutions on the ball and it is turning square probably tells you everything you need to know about this pitch.

We love Test cricket. There is no point playing it on pitches like this.

The players are back out there. Ollie Pope is the latest England batsman into the Indian web. He's at the non-striker's end while Axar Patel bowls to Ben Stokes.

Yesterday we were seeing a lot of turn on offer. These are really experienced India bowlers who are used to bowling in these conditions. England can learn from how Rohit and Pant played proactively.

You have got to be honest and say if this match was staged anywhere else in the world the ICC would be crawling all over it and Chennai would be taken off the hosting list. This is not a pitch Test cricket should be played on. It is a lottery. It is disappointing. It is not an advert for Test cricket.

If you have a problem with the pitch, what did you make of the surface Stuart Broad took 8-15 on?

I do have a problem with a pitch that lasts for two sessions of a 15 session match. (The toss should not decide a match). Test cricket should adopt the "only have a toss if the away team doesn't want to bat first" rule!

Adarsh Soman: Pitches in England can swing any time on a rainy day. Why can’t pitches in India can turn on any time on sunny day? Welcome to India conditions.

Prashant Kunnath: Don't think it's a poor pitch. Spinning square is not poor. Requires a different skill set. Many batsmen have scored runs on such pitches. Hayden, Smith, Pietersen, Kallis, Cook... The bounce has been mostly even. Too much inconsistent bounce is when a pitch is poor.

I've just seen that Rory Burns dropped his bat as he walked off after being dismissed.

That might not be the worst thing he did with it.

Morning. Let's get a few things out there...

I've got no problem with the pitch.

Rohit's knock is now looking even better.

It might be easier said than done, but at least one England batsman would be better off playing a few shots.
