I've got the perfect thing to lift you from your early morning, collapse-induced gloom. Here's Stephan Shemilt. I'm going to go and study some weather radars.

Is there any difference between this and a green top where the ball hoops around corners?

Dr Stephen Fawcett: I'm all for helping out the bowlers but can this be genuinely called a Test quality strip if it's like this on the morning of day 2?

India's players march off, feeling (and looking) 10ft tall. Their whites look whiter. Their shoulders broader. They look like a team of stars again.

The home dressing room stands to applaud them on their way off.

    Lawrence c Gill b Ashwin 9 (Eng 39-4)

    The last ball before lunch...

It's a regulation inside edge onto pad and straight to short leg. Lawrence slumps over his bat, gutted at what he has done. India's spinner leaps into his captain's arms.

  7. Eng 38-3published at 17 overs

    Lawrence 9, Stokes 7

I don't think Axar Patel has bowled a loose delivery yet. Ashwin will bowl the final over before the break.

England players getting the full flavour of Test cricket in India now - some of the newer members of the squad may have wondered what the fuss was about after the first Test. Getting anything out of this game from this position will be of significantly more value than the first Test win...

I think it was a case of "it's Ben Stokes - why not?" with that review. The lunch break is in sight. Can Lawrence and Stokes get there?

  10. Not outpublished at 05:55 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2021

There's way too much turn meaning the ball would have comfortably missed. Ashwin shrugs. Kohli not impressed.

Ben Stokes hasn't been caught but he could be lbw...

Ravichandran Ashwin seems to be the only one who thinks this was out. Ben Stokes shakes his head.

We haven't even seen India's mystery left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav yet. You may remember he tied England in knots in an ODI in 2018.

Lawrence's singles are coming when he uses his feet and hits to mid-on. He has six from 41 balls. Eight minutes to go until lunch.

  15. Eng 34-3published at 14 overs

    Lawrence 5, Stokes 7

Pant's chirp is relentless. Lawrence is back in his shell. Kohli is pulling the strings like the headteacher on sports day.

I can confirm that James and I are not a couple. I have just caught my own other half watching the cricket though, having escaped the noisy child with the rubbish excuse of 'My stomach keeps rumbling - I think it's keeping her awake.' It seems Stockport is indeed a hotspot.

    Kate, still in Stockport

I think it's more likely there be a heat wave in Stockport than rain in Chennai any time soon. Ben Stokes is at least ticking the score over early in his innings.

Craig Bickerton: What’s the forecast like? Any rain on the horizon? Maybe the Stockport crew can lend them some of theirs.

  19. Eng 29-3published at 05:44 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2021

Eeeek. Lawrence makes a break for freedom, charging Ashwin who had previously kept him to two scoring shots in 27 balls. Lawrence clunks it and the ball only just clears the in-field.
