    Notts 59-1 v Durham

    Martin Emmerson
    BBC Radio Newcastle

The first surprise today was to see how short the boundaries were when I arrived at The Riverside.

I initially thought they were from an Under-15s match, or had been moved in to allow some last minute grass cutting.

But no, it is part of a cunning plan by Durham to try and gain maximum points.

The boundary is 60 yards on each side and about 55 yards from the bowlers ends.

It's so small it reminds me of Subbuteo Cricket - but it's not yet led to a run fest. Durham put Notts in and have kept things tight.

Chris Rushworth celebrated his 35th birthday by bowling Haseeb Hameed for 12 in the seventh over - and it took Notts an hour and a half to reach 50.

Half century for Pieter Malanpublished at 12:39 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Bears 85-1 v Pears

Pieter Malan reaches 50 for the 80th time in his first-class career- but it's his first for Warwickshire (one six, seven fours).

Dom Sibley is on 34, having now speed up with four boundaries of his own.

Ben Slater has found his touch now after a patient start.

Five boundaries so far in his 27.

    Ben Compton is on 16.

  4. wicket

Davies lbw Virdi 42published at 12:36 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Surrey v Somerset 76-2

    Now then.

It's still going to take some effort for Surrey to jump two places into Group Two's top two.

Amar Virdi celebrates in aeroplane fashion, arms wheeling, after trapping Steve Davies lbw for 42.

Surrey aren't exactly flying but it's a decent start for the hosts.

    Glamorgan v Northants 68-2

There's been another wicket at Sophia Gardens by the way.

Ricardo Vasconcelos becomes Timm van der Gugten's second victim of the day, chipping a pretty poor shot to Kiran Carlson at mid-wicket.

  6. wicket

    Critchley lbw b S Cook 9published at 12:33 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Derbyshire 59-4 v Essex

Second wicket for Sam Cook - but a first fore Essex in 10 overs.

Home skipper Matt Critchley has now gone too.

His 34-ball vigil comes to an end as he is adjudged leg before wicket to Cook for 9.

Harry Came is the new man to join Leus du Plooy, who is on 17.

    Derbyshire 59-3 v Essex

Derbyshire skipper Matt Critchley and South African Leus du Plooy are bedding things down again after that poor start against Essex.

From 31-3 at Derby, the hosts first reached 50 and have now all but doubled their score.

  8. wicket

    Bracey b Wheal 0published at 12:30 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Glos 66-2 v Hants

    Oh wow. Game on.

Most definitely not a captain's innings from James Bracey, who departs for a seven-ball duck, bowled by Brad Wheal.

Two wickets in the space of nine balls for Hampshire in this winner-take-all Group Two clash.

  9. Postpublished at 12:29 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Glos 61-1 v Hants

Long hair and face paint, Colin de Grandhomme comes running in like the Ultimate Warrior.

Wonder if he went to the boundary and started shaking the ropes after taking that wicket.

  10. wicket

Scott lbw de Grandhomme 31published at 12:20 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Glos 61-1 v Hants

There's that breakthrough Hampshire were after - and it's come from that man Colin de Grandhomme.

He's bowled 3.3 overs, two maidens, gone for just one run and now has taken a wicket.

George Scott had survived an lbw appeal a few moments earlier but this time he's gone and Hampshire have a foothold.

    Surrey v Somerset 67-1

Somerset might have lost Devon Conway earlier than they might have wanted but they are still motoring along at the Kia Oval.

Steve Davies has taken up the baton from his fellow opener, unbeaten on 37.

  12. 50 runs

    Glos 54-0 v Hants

Hampshire have brought Colin de Grandhomme into the attack and he's conceded just one run in his opening two overs, with one maiden.

    But it's wickets they need.

Even this early in proceedings, time is their enemy but Gloucestershire openers George Scott and Miles Hammond have looked comfortable for the most part and their partnership has already passed 50.

Gloucestershire, second in Group Two, will be happy to amble along against their third-placed visitors, who have to win to qualify for Division One.

    Kent v Sussex 1-0

Under way at Canterbury where a virtual Kent second string will face Sussex.

If you missed it, the game was delayed by an hour after a positive Covid case was confirmed and Kent had to rejig their line-up.

They have five Championship debutants - and players who were not expected to play today have been put through their paces, as you can see below.

50 up for Lancashirepublished at 12:03 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Lancashire 50-0 v Yorkshire

Lancashire are also past 50 in Leeds.

Alex Davies, as usual, has been the busier of the two. He has hit five boundaries in his 32, two of them in consecutive balls off Jordan Thompson.

Keaton Jennings is on a more conservative 16 - having faced 10 deliveries more.

These two put on 71 for the first wicket in Manchester in May, when the two sides last met in the Championship. And the Red Rose went on to make 509-9 declared, to win by an innings.

  15. 50 runs

50 up for Bearspublished at 12:02 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Bears 51-1 v Pears

Warwickshire's fifty comes up at New Road - and as the early wicket of Rob Yates went down in the first over before a run had been scored, it's also a 50 partnership.

South African Pieter Malan has 41 of them, including six fours and a six.

Don Sibley is on 10 - and he's had more of the strike.

Worcestershire have teenage spinner Josh Baker on for an early bowl, on his debut.

  16. wicket

Gay c Cooke b Van Der Gugten 22published at 11:59 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Glamorgan v Northants 40-1

Little other than pride - and third place in Group Three - to play for in Cardiff today but Glamorgan have made a breakthrough against Northants.

I was just about to type how solidly the visitors had started but then Timm van der Gugten tempts Emilio Gay into a little tickle and it's a tidy catch from Glamorgan wicketkeeper Chris Cooke.

Annie Chave: Our game's been cancelled today but luckily I can watch Surrey v Somerset on live stream so all's not lost - and what more can you ask for than watching such great players like Ashwin and Conway as well as homegrown talent. CC the gift that keeps giving.

Couldn't agree more Annie, some great cricket in prospect over the next four days...

  18. wicket

    Guest b Porter 13published at 11:49 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Derbyshire 31-3 v Essex

A third wicket inside the first hour at Derby as Jamie Porter gets in on the act to bowl Brooke Guest for 13.

Stand-in skipper Matt Critchley comes out to join Leus du Plooy.

These two have work to do, especially in the wake of the missing Billy Godleman and Wayne Madsen, both out injured.

Group One backmarkers Derbyshire, one of only two sides without a win in this year's Championship, have been bowled out for less than 150 in their last five Championship innings.

Already it's looking a little ominous!

  19. wicket

Reece lbw b Snater 16published at 11:43 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Derbyshire 25-2 v Essex

Derbyshire lose their second wicket against Essex. Both openers are now gone following the loss of Luis Reece, leg before wicket to Shane Snater.

The Zimbawean was on as first change and has struck with only his fifth ball.

Leus du Plooy comes in to join Brooke Guest.

  20. First 10 overs safely negotiatedpublished at 11:42 British Summer Time 11 July 2021

    Lancs 17-0 v Yorkshire

Lancs openers Keaton Jernings and Alex Davies have made a good start after being put in to bat at Emerald Headingley.

The first 10 overs of Ben Coad and Dominic Leech have been safely negotiated, although not without one or two alarms.
