  1. Tea at New Roadpublished at 16:08 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Bears 395, Pears 68-0

Daryl Mitchell goes to tea just five short of a fifty on 45.

    Jake Libby is on 22.

All 10 wickets in hand but Worcestershire still trail Warwickshire by 327 runs in the Pears-Bears derby.

The Bears have so far used five bowlers in 21 overs in pursuit of a breakthrough, pacemen Liam Norwell, Craig Miles and Ryan Sidebottom - and spinners Jake Lintott and Rob Yates.

A draw here, with maximum bowling points, will be enough to secure Warwickshire a place in Division One, when the County Championship resumes for its denouement in September.

  2. Play abandoned for the day in County Durhampublished at 15:56 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Notts 312-7 v Durham

Finally it's called off for the day in the Durham-Notts game at Chester-le-Street.

In fairness, BBC reporter Martin Emmerson, a noted weather watcher in these parts, predicted that would be the case several hours ago.

  3. wicket

    Holland c Bracey b Phillips 74published at 15:53 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glos 229 v Hants 174-1

We said Gloucestershire were running out of ideas at Cheltenham.

So much so that they turned to the very occasional right arm off-break of Glenn Phillips - and it worked!

He gets one to turn enough that Ian Holland nicks it to James Bracey.

Thus ends a marathon 174-run opening partnership that has put Hampshire very much in control.

  4. Murky light at Merchant Taylors'?published at 15:52 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Middlesex 324, Leicestershire 122-3

A brief consultation between the two umpires Mark Newell and Ben Debenham at Merchant Taylors'.

The light seems to have been of a little concern after a dark cloud drifted overhead, but legspinner Nathan Sowter is currently on, so they play on.

An early tea might be an option. It's only four or five overs away.

  5. Tea at the Kia Oval, Canterbury and Cardiffpublished at 15:47 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

With Surrey-Somerset, Kent-Sussex and Glamorgan-Northants all delayed by rain or bad light, the umpires at all three of those games have decided now is the opportune moment for tea. And why not.

The prospects for resumption at least one of those grounds, however, is looking grim...

  6. Bad light stops playpublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Kent 122-7 v Sussex 181

The gloom has spread to Canterbury too.

We've had less than an hour and a half of cricket there and the players are off for bad light after this morning's rain.

  7. 50 runs

50 up for Pears at New Roadpublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Bears 395, Pears 51-0

Worcestershire's openers are going well in reply to Warwickshire's 395 all out at New Road.

Daryl Mitchell is already on to 36. Jake Libby is on 14.

  8. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Sophia Gardenspublished at 15:38 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glamorgan 48-2 v Northants 215

Ah, here we go, another rain delay.

Glamorgan leave the field with Marnus Labuschagne unbeaten on 13 and Billy Root on 6no.

That's two games delayed by rain - Surrey v Somerset the other.

Plus one - Durham v Notts - that hasn't even started, and Yorkshire v Lancashire which has been abandoned for the day without play.

  9. 50 runs

50 stand for Ackermann and Inglispublished at 15:37 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Middlesex 324, Leicestershire 113-3

Leicestershire skipper Colin Ackermann and Western Australia's Josh Inglis have not only posted a half-century partnership, they have now more than doubled the Foxes' score.

Ackermann and Inglis are now both on 34.

  10. wicket

    Podmore c Carter b Hunt 37published at 15:30 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Kent 119-7 v Sussex 181

Harry Podmore was getting a bit too adventurous.

He nicks one behind to wicketkeeper Oli Carter.

But that was a nice 37 from Podmore, one of the older heads in this youthful Kent line-up.

  11. 6 runs

for Harry Podmorepublished at 15:29 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Kent 119-6 v Sussex 181

Kent have steadied the ship to the extent that Harry Podmore is getting adventurous at Canterbury.

Spinner Jack Carson drops a short one that's begging to be hit and Podmore obliges, crashing it high over the ropes.

  12. rain stops play

Rain stops play at the Kia Ovalpublished at 15:28 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Surrey 24-0 v Somerset 429

Pretty foreboding clouds at the Kia Oval.

Rain has just halted a decent response from Surrey who were 24-0 in reply to Somerset's 429, with Rory Burns 18no off 18 balls.

The England opener had hit four boundaries and seemed keen to get runs on the board quickly - maybe he knew the bad weather was coming.

  13. 50 runs

50 for Ian Hollandpublished at 15:25 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glos 229 v Hants 136-0

Ian Holland follows fellow Hampshire opener Joe Weatherley into the half-century books.

He was stuck on 48 for a good 15-20 minutes but eventually takes two off a Matt Taylor delivery.

The visitors are rapidly becoming favourites for this decisive Group Two qualifying tussle - Gloucestershire need to break this opening partnership but appear to be running out of ideas.

  14. wicket

    Lloyd c Vasconcelos b Procter 13published at 15:14 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glamorgan 32-2 v Northants 215

The habit Northants developed of losing quickfire wickets in the second half of their innings has proved contagious.

Visiting skipper Ricardo Vasconcelos takes a second catch at slip in a matter of minutes.

This one was slightly tougher to the first, shoulder height to his right but he adjusts brilliantly to remove David Lloyd - and that's both Glamorgan openers gone.

  15. wicket

    Cooke c Vasconcelos b Sanderson 16published at 15:10 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glamorgan 28-1 v Northants 215

An early-ish wicket for Northants in Cardiff.

Catching practice for Ricardo Vasconcelos at slip, Joe Cooke the guilty party.

  17. Two Daryl Mitchells, there's only two Daryl Mitchellspublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Bears 395, Pears 28-0

Meanwhile, while Daryl Mitchell Mark II bowls for Middlesex at Merchant Taylors', the original Daryl Mitchell, the former Worcestershire skipper, has made a solid start for the Pears against Warwickshire.

He and Jake Libby have safely negotiated the first six overs from Liam Norwell and Craig Miles.

Mitchell is already on 22, including four boundaries. Libby is on 6.

  18. dropped catch

Dropped catchpublished at 15:04 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Glos 229 v Hants 127-0

Defending 229, Gloucestershire can't afford many dropped catches - and they have let Ian Holland off the hook twice already.

He was dropped near the start of the innings on five and, now, just short of his half-century, Tom Lace puts down a very presentable chance at mid-wicket to break this opening Hampshire partnership.

  19. Calm restored at Merchant Taylors'published at 14:59 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Middlesex 324, Leicestershire 77-3

After the fall of nine wickets today, there is now more of an air of peace and calm at Merchant Taylors'.

It's 10 overs since the last one fell as South African Colin Ackermann and Western Australian Josh Inglis slowly restore order.

As the Foxes' two best batsmen, it's not a complete surprise. But they are being made to work hard for their runs by former England paceman Tim Murtagh and New Zealander Daryl Mitchell.

Foxes skipper Ackermann is on 23, Inglis is on 9.

  20. wicket

Somerset all out for 429published at 14:53 British Summer Time 12 July 2021

    Surrey v Somerset 429

Somerset are all out after batting for pretty much a day and a half - that's proper first-class cricket for you.

They were strong throughout their order with virtually everyone chipping in - even last man Jack Brooks hit nine before being caught off Daniel Moriarty for the Surrey bowler's second wicket.

Jack Leach ends unbeaten on 28 but it was skipper James Hildreth's 107 that was the innings' highlight.
