  3. Postpublished at 18:26 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

Well then, an eventful first day of this final round to say the least, let's show you how all the matches stand at stumps...

  4. Close of play at Chelmsfordpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Essex 170 v Northamptonshire 81 & 23-5

And it ends up being a total of 25 wickets that fall on the first day between Essex and Northants.

The visitors are already 23-5 in their second innings - 66 behind making Essex bat again.

Sam Cook has taken four of those and a total of nine in the day after he bowls James Sales for a duck off the penultimate ball.

Not much chance of there being any cricket to see there on Thursday I'd say....

  5. Make that 23 wickets now....published at 18:10 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

Still play continuing in a couple of matches, notably at Chelmsford where Essex have taken another wicket.

Sam Cook has Rob Keogh caught at first slip by Alastair Cook to leave Northants 21-3 in their second innings, still 68 behind.

  6. Close of play at Aigburthpublished at 18:03 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Lancashire 25-3 v Hampshire

Night-watchman Jack Blatherwick and Josh Bohannon make sure Hampshire don't make any further inroads into the batting as stumps come at 25-3.

They trail Hampshire's 143 by only 118 runs, but on this pitch, that feels like a long way off. And getting to 200 and a first batting point would be a real achievement.

The ball has definitely been the winner on day one at Aigburth. 168 runs for 13 wickets at less than two runs per over shows how difficult it has been with bat in hand.

  7. Close of play at Trent Bridgepublished at 17:55 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 292-9 v Yorkshire

On the whole, a successful first day for Nottinghamshire as they chase the win needed to have a chance of claiming the title.

Having been put in to bat on a green-looking pitch, to bat the day out was a fine effort. Joe Clarke's 109, supported by Joey Evison's unbeaten 58, have been the bedrocks of this total as they have collected two batting points.

Yorkshire have plugged away and picked three wickets in each session, but Adam Lyth dropping Clarke twice could have fatally damaged their chances of victory.

  8. Close of play at Edgbastonpublished at 17:54 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Warwickshire 283-4 v Somerset

Stumps in Birmingham as Warwickshire reach 283-4 from 96 overs.

They will have another 14 overs in the morning to try and score 67 more runs to reach the promised land of 350 Clive Eakin referred to earlier.

Sam Hain finishes the day 83 not out.

  9. Two more wickets fall at Chelmsfordpublished at 17:50 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Essex 170 v Northamptonshire 81 & 4-2

    Sam CookImage source, Rex Features

There's not going to be much of this match left to watch tomorrow....

Essex have already taken two wickets in Northamptonshire's second innings and there nine more overs left to bowl in the day!

  10. wicket

WICKET Fletcher c Thompson b Revis 4published at 17:50 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 292-9 v Yorkshire

Revis claims a second wicket as Luke Fletcher is surprised by one that bounces up on him and he dollies the simplest of catches to Jordan Thompson at cover.

The Nottinghamshire innings is threatening to fizzle out before they get to 300.

  11. wicket

WICKET Hutton c Duke b Revis 9published at 17:39 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 282-8 v Yorkshire

A maiden first-class wicket for Yorkshire's Matthew Revis as Brett Hutton is caught behind trying to thrash one off the back foot.

Suddenly 300 and the third batting point is not so certain for the home county.

  12. wicket

WICKET Balderson c Alsop b Abbas 5published at 17:35 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Lancashire 15-3 v Hampshire 143

Mohammad Abbas has another as Hampshire have come roaring back into this game.

Again, a perfect example of new-ball bowling as Abbas gets one to bounce, move and take the edge of George Balderson's bat.

It's 2-10 in his seventh over and a first bowling point and first point of the match for the league leaders.

  13. wicket

WICKET Lamb lbw b Brooks 44published at 17:28 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Warwickshire 261-4 v Somerset

Partnership finally broken by Somerset as Warwickshire lose their fourth wicket.

Matthew Lamb is adjudged leg before against Jack Brooks for 44 to one that looked to be sliding past leg stump.

That ends a 122-run stand between Lamb and Sam Hain (77 not out).

  14. Essex dismissed for 170published at 17:27 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Essex 170 v Northamptonshire 81 & 0-0

They're going to begin the third innings of the match at Chelmsford on the first evening shortly.

Essex have been bowled out for just 170 in reply to Northants' 81. Adam Wheater is last out as top-scorer on 34.

Jack White and Tom Taylor take four wickets apiece for Northants.

  15. Hain motors Bears to another pointpublished at 17:23 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Warwickshire 259-3 v Somerset

A handsome cover drive for four from Sam Hain off Tom Abell brings up Warwickshire's second batting bonus point.

He then hits the next two balls for four to move to 75 not out.

Hain and Matthew Lamb (44 not out) have now added 120 for this fourth wicket.

  16. wicket

WICKET Clarke c Lyth b Coad 109published at 17:21 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 270-7 v Yorkshire

Yorkshire finally get a breakthrough in this final session and it's the big wicket of Joe Clarke.

After two previous chances, there is no escape this time for Clarke as Lyth clings on at second slip to give Ben Coad a third wicket.

But it was still a fine performance from Clarke after his first century of the season off 204 balls with 15 fours and a six.

Notts need a victory and Clarke's hundred gives them a platform to dictate the rest of the game.

  17. Guard of honour for retiring Mitchellpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Worcestershire 12-0 v Leicestershire 222

    MitchellImage source, BBC Sport

Our colleague Ged Scott captures a nice moment at New Road where Worcestershire opener Daryl Mitchell is greeted to a guard of honour as he strides out to bat for potentially the penultimate time in his career.

Mitchell, 37, is hanging up his boots after 19 years with the county., external

It's apt that Leicestershire are the opposition as his full County Championship debut came against the Foxes 16 years ago at Grace Road when he also scored his maiden first-class century.

  18. 50 runs

50 for Joey Evisonpublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Nottinghamshire 270-6 v Yorkshire

    Joey EvisonImage source, Getty Images

A maiden first-class half-century for Joey Evison off 97 balls.

The 19-year-old has provided valuable support for centurion Joe Clarke as the partnership moves to an unbroken 97.

  19. wicket

WICKET Wells lbw b Barker 0published at 17:15 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Lancashire 9-2 v Hampshire 143

And now Abbas' opening partner, Keith Barker does get in on the act.

This time, Peter Hartley is agreeable to his LBW shout, and Luke Wells is on his way for a duck. The batsman does not look too impressed, though.

The question is whether it pitched outside off-stump, but from the left-arm over bowler to the left-hand batsman. I would imagine that would be umpire's call if that was in use.

  20. 50 runs

50 for Sam Hainpublished at 17:09 British Summer Time 21 September 2021

    Warwickshire 238-3 v Somerset

    HainImage source, Getty Images

A sixth half-century of the season for Sam Hain as Warwickshire begin to start ticking the board along against the new ball.

Hain gets to his landmark off 113 balls with eight fours.
