It was disappointing. I thought it was a real opportunity for England to show a bit more intent. Williamson wanted to have a go for it. I'd have liked to have seen England a little bit busier.

I completely understood the start - that was always going to be the danger period - but from then on, I'd like to have seen them a little busier and see if they could get themselves to have a dip in the final session.

Credit to New Zealand for an attacking declaration. They took three wickets but just couldn't get the win they deserved.

There was so much to gain, for a young team, to explore what might be possible. It was a brave declaration from Williamson that has tantalised us and left us a wee bit disappointed.

Root emerges down the pavilion steps with a hint of a smile on his face. He gives Dom Sibley a pat on the back. It's job done from the England skipper's perspective.

England's decision not to chase made for some unsatisfactory cricket in the afternoon session.

Here come the handshakes. With five overs remaining Kane Williamson has called it a day.

The match is drawn with England ending on 170-3, 103 runs short of a target they never tried to get.

Ollie Pope grins after ending up on his knees when jamming his bat down on the ball to keep one that scuttles low out. Everyone is looking at Williamson now...

There's a chap asleep in his seat in the stand but that's not enough to change Kane Williamson's mind. Still he keeps this game going. Six overs remain.

So disappointing from England. Fair play New Zealand for trying to make a game of it but England should be ashamed for refusing the challenge. After waiting months and months to have fans back, those in the ground have every right to be furious this afternoon.

Maybe this is just Williamson's way of punishing England for all that fortune in the World Cup final. To be fair, if England were to lose this I'm still not sure it'd be as extraordinary as all that happened at Lord's that day.

I still don't blame England, as uninspiring as it has been.

Pope edges for four and there are a few more cheers, I think with a bit of sarcasm. Kane Williamson must really love cricket. On we go.

Matt Henry is on as a sub fielder but I've had the excitement beaten out of me so I can't make the obvious joke.
