  2. Post update

Jon Lewis on the Zak Crawley 'catch' of Devon Conway: "That's one of the great things about sport, it always divides opinion. It is the way sport goes and the decision didn't go our way. Stuart is pretty grumpy, as you can see on the field. He is a real competitor."

  3. Post update

More from Boult on Sky Sports: "The guys found a way to be effective on day one. England came out nicely this morning and played with some flair to get some valuable runs, but the game is nicely poised.

"We knew England would come out and look to up the ante, full credit to them, but it was nice to keep them to just above 300.

"It's been difficult to change between formats, especially with all the self-isolation, but it's been really great being back out there.

"This is a flat pitch. I'm not sure if it'll deteriorate. It's good to be batting now. I won't put a number on it but we need as many as possible."

  4. Post update

    A shred of hope...

  5. Post update

England bowling coach Jon Lewis on TMS: "Stuart Broad produced a fantastic spell with James Anderson helping him from the other end. The first ball didn't do very much at all.

"We feel like we picked the best side to take 20 wickets on his pitch. We've got the new ball in the morning, and we've seen in Test cricket that things can change quite quickly.

"It looked a really good pitch at the toss. We wanted to score more runs than we did to be honest and New Zealand showed us how to bat on that pitch. Looking forward we've got a really young side and we've got to appreciate they will make mistakes and be patient with them."

  6. Post update

New Zealand bowler Trent Boult on Sky Sports: "It was great fun being out there. The game is nicely poised going into day three.

"We won't get too far ahead of ourselves, we're still a fair few runs behind but the lads have done well this afternoon. It was a bit gutting to lose Will Young at the end there but he batted really well.

"It's great to have Devon Conway in the squad and long may his form continue."

  7. Post update

    Michael Vaughan

Former England captain on BBC Test Match Special

Will Young will play great. Joe Root will be thanking Dan Lawrence, but his drop has cost England quite a few runs. It was a bonus wicket.

New Zealand were excellent today. They sort of showed England how to bat in Test match cricket. You have to ebb and flow. From Test match batting and the way you need to play in Test cricket I thought they were brilliant.

  8. Post update

That wicket to end the day, with Dan Lawrence removing Will Young, gives England some hope.

But they better hope the new ball really talks tomorrow morning.

  9. Post update

Anderson and Broad were toying with Ross Taylor when he first came out.

But he successfully overturned this lbw shout off Anderson and rode the storm admirably to remain unbeaten at the close.

  10. Post update

Devon Conway looked well on course for a ton, only to pick out the man in the deep - a real bonus for England...

  11. Post update

Joe Root had a horrid experience after lunch - dropping Will Young and then getting clattered by Devon Conway...

  12. Post update

Devon Conway - a double centurion on debut at Lord's - continued to make Test batting look very easy.

England thought they had him for 22, caught by Zak Crawley off Stuart Broad. But the soft signal was not out and it was not overturned.

England were fuming. We'll let you judge this one...

  13. Post update

Stuart Broad, back in front of a vocal crowd, bowled superbly early on, taking the key wicket of Tom Latham...

  14. Post update

Dan Lawrence also brought out plenty of flourishing drives but ran out of support as Wood, Stuart Broad and James Anderson fell.

Lawrence ended unbeaten on 81 and England were 303 all out. Disappointing after winning the toss, but a decent recovery from 175-6.

  15. Post update

It feels a very long time ago but England actually started the day very well, mainly through some terrific strokeplay by Mark Wood, of all people...

  16. Post update

    Jeremy Coney

Former New Zealand captain on BBC Test Match Special

New Zealand have worked hard, and it is a shame they've lost that wicket. They've put together some partnerships, but let's see what tomorrow brings.

  17. Post update

    Daniel Norcross

    BBC Test Match Special

There was disbelief, and almost denial, on Will Young's face.

  18. Close of play - NZ 229-3

    Trail by 74

That wicket in the final over of course also means the close of play.

Will Young will be gutted - a maiden Test ton looked his for the taking. But he showed tremendous organisation and patience to steer his side, along with Devon Conway, to a very strong position.

Ross Taylor also overcame a horrid start and remains unbeaten on 46.

New Zealand end day two on 229-3, trailing by 74 runs and on top.

Though England have a second new ball available early on tomorrow - can James Anderson and Stuart Broad do what they've done so many times before?

  19. Post update

    Daniel Norcross

    BBC Test Match Special

Would you believe it!?! Well, well, well you've got to feel for Will Young.

What a bonus wicket for England, and perhaps an inspired bit of captaincy from Joe Root.

  20. WICKET

    Young c Pope b Lawrence 82 (NZ 229-3)

Well, my days. Have Dan Lawrence's part-time off breaks given England a lifeline in this match?

Nothing part-time about this delivery to be fair. A superb bit of bowling, bite and turn to take the inside edge of Will Young's bat before the ball pops up off the pad.

Ollie Pope does well at short leg to follow it and snaffle the catch diving forward.

New Zealand still on top but that is a massive, massive bonus for an England side who looked bereft for most of that final session.
