Young and Taylor tap a single apiece before Young slashes at one last up and nearly nicks off.
That was close. Probably the closest England have come in a long while.

There aren't even enough overs left in the day for England to take the new ball.
Sigh.
Joe Root carries on.
Can Ollie Pope take the gloves off James Bracey?
What does Zak Crawley bowl?

Andrew Stone: Are England desperate enough yet to give Lawrence a bowl? #shouldhaveplayedLeach.
Ross Taylor is one of the best cutters of a ball.
So don't bowl short and wide to him. Olly Stone does and that's four.
Joe Root is seething.
Very much file this one under 'good toss to lose'.
Olly Stone returns...

England bowling first might have been a better option. It did more yesterday - it was definitely a better day for four quicks and the pitch has arguably played better today.

Could England have picked Darren Stevens to wobble it around a bit?
James Vince bowls a bit, right? Don't @ me.
New Zealand under 100 away from England's score.

Sam McElroy: Scaffolding Chanderpaul c Kevlar Pietersen b Lasith Embuilderniya for a duck (tape).
Ross Taylor does finally free his arms and swipes Joe Root over midwicket for four.
If his eye is in and he faces Root enough, the Kiwis could really put England in the hurt locker before the close.
England should bring Ben Stokes on to make something happen, as the cliche goes.
Oh, wait, yeah. Ho, hum.

Ross Taylor mistimes a pull shot but still picks up a single to bring up the 200 for the tourists.
Ugh. Ugly, ugly, ugly.
Mark Wood bangs down a nothing short ball that starts outside leg stump and sails even further away with the swing.
James Bracey stands no chance of stopping it and it's given as byes. Poor bloke. That should've been a wide really.

If New Zealand get to stumps two down they'll fancy batting the whole day tomorrow.
They should be level by around lunchtime, so if they bat all day they'll be in a good position.
I feel the supposed peril facing Test cricket is often overstated, but, yes, this series has been a bit flat, in spite of some great cricket and performances at times. Hopefully it's just unfortunate timing in the schedule and not an augur of things to come.
Meanwhile, Joe Root wheels through a tidy, but unthreatening, maiden over.

Very worried about Test cricket. This should have been a hype series. Historically the 'home side to beat' versus the world number one side. Dampened by injuries and sides resting or recovering from IPL. Two-Test series in England and we don't see the best players in the world playing. Root - player of a generation? Will be dogged by captaincy performance which he can't control.

Young 71, Taylor 27
England need Young out before he gets to a century and Taylor out before he gets to 50. If they reach those landmarks still together at the crease, England are in horrendous trouble.
Mark Wood slides down leg and concedes four leg byes.
England not threatening with James Anderson and Stuart Broad out of the attack.
And how they miss the metronomic command of line that Jofra Archer has.
