I've missed this noise, isn't it brilliant?

    What a reception for a number 11.

James Anderson - on his record 162nd appearance for an England Test player - gets a tremendous reception as he strides to the crease.

A really important role to play here - stick in for as long as possible to support Dan Lawrence.

He's got four balls of Trent Boult to survive for now.

That was a curious bit of cricket. Stuart Broad stood there but the New Zealanders's were adamant that they had him.

That is a good ball to a left-hander.

    Broad c Blundell b Boult 0 (Eng 289-9)

No teeing off for Stuart Broad today.

A tame dismissal really, prodding away from his body to a Trent Boult delivery that had nice shape on it but definitely could've been left alone.

A thin nick and Tom Blundell easily snaffles it. Broad trudges off for a duck.

  5. Eng 289-8published at 96 overs

Dan Lawrence clips into the leg side looking for a single but it's too close to mid-on and he can't keep the strike.

A fine over from Matt Henry.

There was a handover from Wood to Broad at the bottom of the dressing room steps. A glove punch, a pat on the backside. "Thanks, Woody. I'll take it from here."

  7. Eng 289-8published at 95.3 overs

Stuart Broad doesn't get off the mark but picks up a leg bye to put Dan Lawrence on strike.

How does Lawrence go from here? If Broad sticks around long enough, a maiden Test century could be a distinct possibility.

My mates are in the queue to get into Edgbaston. I am working from home and I'm jealous of that queue to get in to watch live sport. Desperate times.

So does Dan Lawrence let Stuart Broad have the strike and just tee off or does he try to keep him away as much as possible?

Broad defends his first delivery, angled across him from Matt Henry over the wicket.

That's a shame. That is just what England needed - it has been a good start to the morning.

It didn't particularly do much, but it was just in the right area, and Mark Wood's blood was going.

  11. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 95.1 overs

    Wood b Henry 41 (Eng 288-8)

Boo. Matt Henry spoils the fun, as his namesake do so often in the office. (I'm kidding, Matt).

Henry pushes it a bit fuller, Mark Wood goes for another booming cover drive but just ends up inside edging it onto his stumps.

Still, a sparkling, vital knock and tremendous entertainment to start day two.

And now we get the hilarity of Stuart Broad batting. Yes.

Used to know a bloke called Norville when I lived in St Helens. Looked a bit like Shaggy actually.

I made a joke about this being a quick Test with Mark Wood down to bat at eight.

He's come in at nine and made a mockery of that. Sorry. But not sorry - this is brilliant to see.

We thought that Mark Wood would just play for Dan Lawrence but he is doing the attacking.

Mark Wood now flashes a lusty drive over third man for four. I mean...

Neil Wagner does really well there. There is no more wholehearted cricketer in the world at the moment.

  18. Eng 283-7published at 94.1 overs

Dan Lawrence punches gorgeously down the ground - it deserves a four but Neil Wagner does superbly to chase it down and keep it to three.

    Lawrence into the 70s...

I wonder if anyone is doing back-to-back days in the Hollies. Hair of the dog. For now, everything is respectable, like the start of a wedding day, everyone suited, smart and shiny. Later on the tie will be around the head and the suit trousers dirty from sliding across the dancefloor.
