Jonesy obviously likes the line, it's whether there's any bat on it.

There's an ambitious shout for leg before here against Bates and we're going to take a look with Sue Redfern...

  3. NZ 26-0published at 3.3 overs

Steady start from Ecclestone until her fourth ball slides down leg and she concedes five wides as absolutely nothing is on it.

Enough chat about cold water therapy and questionable choices of sea swimming - Sophie Ecclestone is on for her first bowl of the evening as England turn to spin for the first time tonight....

You wouldn't catch me there. We did a bit of cold-water immersion in the lake in Queenstown, New Zealand last winter - it wasn't my favourite recovery session.

The weather's so good here today, I went for a swim in the sea. Sort of a pound-shop Daniel Craig.

  7. NZ 20-0 (target 128)published at 3 overs

    Devine 11, Bates 3

Freya Davies gets out of the back end of that over without too much more damage.

But decent start this from Devine and Bates as they find themselves up with the early rate.

England have gone with three seamers who swing the ball, though I think Freya Davies may have a few nerves. 128 is a difficult total to chase - whether you go after the ball early on, or take your time.

And as soon as I said that, Sophie Devine smashed it into the stands! That's her bread and butter, she picks up that length very well.

  9. 6 runs

    NZ 17-0published at 2.3 overs

Sophie Devine gets the long levers out as she decides to dispatch Freya Davies third ball of the over for a big six over deep mid-wicket.

    Powerful stuff.

  10. Postpublished at 20:44 British Summer Time 4 September 2021

Freya Davies into the attack in the third over after Nat Sciver decides to do some early rotation of the bowling.

Davies into the side for Katherine Brunt for this match.

One of things I love about the modern game is the zinger bails. It just provides drama.

  12. NZ 8-0published at 2 overs

    Target 128

Tidy start from Tash Farrant with her first three balls swinging back into the right-handers.

Sophie Devine gets off the mark by just helping one down to fine leg and they're back in time for a couple.

Good reply from Farrant as she gets one to beat Devine's outside edge. But undoes that with a wide down the legside plus a fumble from Amy Jones that allows them to come back for a couple more.

Tash Farrant rightly deserves her chance, and it is great to see her back in the England shirt and doing well.

Tash Farrant then to share the new ball with her left-armers....

  15. NZ 2-0published at 1 over

    Target 128

Some confident-looking shots early on from Suzie Bates, but she picks the fielders.

Maia Bouchier in the action early on with a diving stop at extra cover that saved a certain four.

Bates off the mark with a couple into the legside as Danni Wyatt scurries across along the boundary sponges to cut it off.

Nice ball to finish the over from Sciver as she beats Bates' outside edge and Amy Jones whips off the bails sharpish.

I'm heading off to those finals tomorrow myself and the forecast looks very good for it.

But, before that comes around, we've got the small matter of a match on the line here at Hove.

Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine stride out to open for New Zealand. Stand-in England skipper Nat Sciver will open the bowling....

    Charlotte Edwards Cup finals

As they've mentioned on TMS, it's finals day in the Charlotte Edwards Cup - the regional women's T20 competition - tomorrow at the Ageas Bowl.

Home-ground hopefuls Southern Vipers, coached by the eponymous Charlotte Edwards, take on Northern Diamonds in the eliminator (12:00 BST), with the winners staying on to face South East Stars in the final (16:00).

And there's commentary on BBC Radio Solent - which you can listen to via the BBC Sport website and app alongside text commentary of both the eliminator and final.

Maia Bouchier's 25 off 24 balls is the highest score from a T20 debutant in the women's game since that first T20 international we've been talking about this evening back on this ground in 2004.

    Cheers Callum.

Looking forward to this, New Zealand have got some very powerful hitters at the top of their order who could make this target look miniscule.

But England have also got some canny slower bowlers who might find this surface to their liking.

That is me done for the evening. Adam Williams will take you through New Zealand's chase.

    It should be a cracker.
