We're 45 minutes into the Test and England's number five Ben Stokes makes his way to the middle.

I genuinely, and perhaps naively, thought this would be a quiet opening session.

    Root b Roach 13 (Eng 23-3)

Oh dear! A wholly misjudged leave from Joe Root and he's bowled.

The ball before, the England captain edged to the slips and a tough chance was spilled by Jermaine Blackwood.

So Kemar Roach decided to take his fielders out of the equation. The ball nips back into the right-hander, Root shoulders his arms and it clips the top of off stump.

As you would expect, the West Indies are jubilant. It's the England wicket any team in world cricket wants.

Beautiful bowling from Seales as he has one skidding through from just back of a length as Lawrence plays and misses.

Aside from a few wayward deliveries wide of the off stump, Seales has looked pretty solid this afternoon.

Look at the positives. Two completed individual innings with 0 ducks. Improvement from 2021.

  7. Eng 23-2published at 7 overs

England sneak a single as Joe Root nudges to the leg side and takes a quick run.

Dan Lawrence is off the mark with a single before Root plays a trademark flick through mid-wicket for four.

A good over for the tourists.

  9. Eng 17-2published at 6 overs

The inquest into England batters' failures has already started as TV replays show Zak Crawley's dismissal. The opener's feet were rooted to the spot, his body unbalanced and poor head movement.

    Another maiden.

There is a lot of excitement around West Indies cricket out here about the talent and potential of Jayden Seales. Plus there can't be many current international cricketers who have 'Nigel' as a middle name.

A lovely wobble seam from Roach has Root playing inside the line. Maiden from the seamer.

We said England needed to make a real statement out here but, so far, this really is same old, same old.

Aaron Campbell: 17-2... yep Jimmy and Broady certainly were the problem.

    Dan: Death, taxes etc etc.

Christie W: It’s almost as if the bowling wasn’t the primary issue.

For all the talk of 'opportunities' we've heard from Root over the last couple of days, Dan Lawrence has the biggest opportunity here right now.

  15. Eng 17-2published at 4 overs

In comes Dan Lawrence as England see off the over.

17-2. It's like we've been transported back to the winter.

Jayden Seales could set tongues wagging if he performs to his potential in this series.

That wicket was a bit more Joshua da Silva in it than Seales though! What a catch.

Crawley c Da Silva b Seales (Eng 17-2)

An absolutely stunning grab! You will be hard stretched to find a better catch from a wicket-keeper than this.

Crawley looks to drive Seales, an inside edge sends the ball through the gap between bat and pad and Joshua Da Silva - who will have been wrong footed - adjusts in a microsecond and leaps to his left to take a terrific one-handed catch. Pure athleticism.

    England are in trouble here.

It will be interesting to see how Root does at number three, having done his best to avoid batting there for so long in his career. Especially given how well he did last year at four.

England have dealt exclusively in boundaries so far today, but they are gifted a run courtesy of a Roach no-ball.
