The bounce will get a bit truer with all the sun on the pitch today, but it will start to take more spin.

It'll be tough for the West Indies batters when they do start their innings.

More from Bairstow: "We have spoken about partnerships and how crucial they can be all the way through the batting order. If we can continue it tomorrow it's really important.

"We want to score as many as possible. That will be the key. We're fortunate we have some strong batters to come. When we do come to bowl it's about being patient and applying ourselves."

That's probably the happiest I've ever seen Jonny Bairstow react to him hitting a century.

England's Jonny Bairstow, speaking to BT Sport, on scoring his first century in the West Indies: "It feels amazing to be honest. I've been fortunate to be on a few tours here. It's an amazing place to come. To score a century in any Test is amazing but here with the travelling fans who haven't been able to come for a few years - what an occasion."

Old school batting in Test match cricket. A phenomenal century. There's no doubting Jonny Bairstow's quality.

Today he really did show his class.

There were two wickets apiece for seamers Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales and Jason Holder.

For England, Ben Stokes played well for 36 and Ben Foakes looked terrific at times for his 42.

Chris Woakes also played a significant supporting role to Bairstow with an unbeaten 24.

What a century. Jonny Bairstow showed the graft and grind required and deserved those bad balls he got to put away later on.

England captain Joe Root is the first one to greet Bairstow as he makes his way to the dressing room. Root offers a handshake and a pat on the back to his pal.

England definitely back in the match thanks to Stokes, Bairstow and Foakes, with a flourish at the end from Woakes.

West Indies will be disappointed they couldn't take a wicket with the new ball before the close

Middled! Chris Woakes plays a beautiful cover drive which whizzes through the blades of grass for four.

And that's stumps. England will undoubtedly be the happier side - especially after their woeful start to the day.

West Indies fatigued as the day went on, but huge praise to the brilliant Jonny Bairstow. He ends the day unbeaten on 109 from 216 deliveries with 17 fours. He has been the difference.

Jayden Seales with the final over of the day. A single brings up the 50 partnership between Bairstow and Woakes.

  15. Eng 263-6published at 85 overs

The hosts turn to Jason Holder to find a late breakthrough

Chris Woakes plays on the up but just wide of the fielder for two runs through mid-wicket. We'll get one more over in before close.

  16. Eng 261-6published at 84 overs

So far, this new ball hasn't brought West Indies much luck. Seales serves it on a plate to Wales - too full and too wide - and Woakes dispatches it to the boundary.

Followed by boos from the crowd as Roach started his run-up and the DJ had to cut the music before they got to the chorus. The crowd sang it anyway.

  18. Eng 255-6published at 83 overs

Roach goes full and strikes Woakes on the front pad. There's a half-hearted appeal from the bowler but it's clearly down the leg side.

A single to Bairstow ensures he keeps the strike. Just over 10 minutes to go until the end of a fascinating first day.

There are 15 minutes left of play and, as predicted, it's Sweet Caroline time. The opening bars even got a cheer.

  20. Eng 253-6published at 82 overs

A beauty from Jayden Seales! Pace, movement off the turf and it completely beats Jonny Bairstow.
