Again Jonny Bairstow finds the middle of his bat - this time to drive a half-volley from Jayden Seales. It bobbles away to the boundary. Seales claps his hands together in frustration.

England have passed 100, something which looked a long way off when I was Googling England's lowest Test scores a few hours ago.

  2. Eng 97-4published at 35 overs

    Stokes 26, Bairstow 23

I've moved house since the last Ashes Test. "Have you tried turning it off and on again?" has been my most used phrase.

Holder has been particularly loose by his previous standards since lunch. Bairstow whacks him for four.

Holder is shaking his head. I don't think he saw the ball at all.

The bowler Alzarri Joseph has taken that well to be fair to him. I've seen a few bowlers who would now be causing the groundstaff a problem by taking their boot to the turf.

Both these two have been playing a really disciplined manner, but that was a real chance from Stokes.

  6. dropped catch

    Eng 93-4published at 33.1 overs

Woah. Out of nowhere Ben Stokes has got away with one big time.

He fiddles loosely outside off stump, only toe-ending the ball to the slips. Holder, the man I was just praising, is standing there but just does not move. The ball went at a catch-able height and only needed Holder to stick out a left hand.

  7. Eng 89-4published at 33 overs

    Stokes 22, Bairstow 19

It has taken until his second spell but England have finally scored a run off Jason Holder. It only took 33 deliveries.

Holder may be the most likeable cricketer in the world.

James Brown: What red ball reset? Just one debutant in this Test, otherwise same players that have consistently underperformed for years now.

  9. Eng 87-4published at 32 overs

Is there anything that gets us more irate than an England batting collapse? Someone jumping a queue?

Maybe that one is just me.

This outfield is slowing up. Ben Stokes only gets two for a nice-looking punch. Up goes another rendition of The Great Escape.

  11. Eng 82-4published at 31 overs

England's favourite umpire Joel Wilson - yes, I'm talking about that lbw decision at Headingley - is getting very twitchy about where 20-year-old seamer Jayden Seales is running in his follow-through.

It doesn't look like he's been officially warned but Seales may be on his last chance.

  12. Eng 81-4published at 30 overs

    Stokes 19, Bairstow 15

Bairstow and Stokes have definitely come out with more intent since the break. The scoring was almost non-existent before lunch. A couple of twos are taken by Stokes in this over.

Chris Carter: Maybe, just maybe, this red ball reset might take longer than two months (out of season with little warm up) and we should all calm the heck down?

    Stokes 13, Bairstow 15

Eeeesh. This spluttering reset almost malfunctions again as Jonny Bairstow gets a top-edge on a shorter ball from Seales. It goes a mile up in the air but fortunately carries over the wicket-keeper's head.

  19. Eng 66-4published at 26 overs

    Another boundary.

Ben Stokes cracks Alzarri Joseph to the boundary, the best shot of his innings so far. Stokes and Bairstow are chuckling out there. They look relaxed, even if the blood pressure of England fans is bubbling a few levels higher.

  20. Eng 61-4published at 25 overs

"Oh Jonny Bairstow, you are the love of my life," sing a few England fans. If he manages to dig them out of this there may be a few more joining in. The atmosphere is currently pretty sedate in the sunshine.
