  1. WI 42-0published at 9.4 overs

Mark Wood bounds in purposefully in what is the final over before lunch.

He bangs his fourth ball in back of a length outside off stump but Kraigg Braithwaite climbs with the delivery and slices it through backward point for four.

Equiano: This all stems from them still having no faith in the top order and picking three all-rounders. The reset has changed nothing, they are still cagey and unwilling to play attacking cricket. I hate to say but I think Root has to go as captain to enact real change

  3. WI 36-0published at 9.0 overs

In time-honoured fashion/cricket tactical logic, Jack Leach's left-arm spin into the attack shortly before the interval.

He probes away outside the left-handed John Campbell's off stump with plenty of encouragement from England's fielders around the bat.

His second ball is tossed up and comes off Campbell's body, taken by short leg. England appeal, more in hope than expectation, but the umpires are not interested.

    Ex-England captain on BT Sport

With the ball England needed to take a leaf of out of the books of Roach and Holder. If they can bowl a disciplined line and length on this pitch they will get their reward.

  5. WI 36-0published at 8.0 overs

As someone with a relatively sheltered upbringing, seeing a middle-aged man in an outrageous costume gyrating on a stage was certainly eye-opening Darren.

Gravy has a Wikipedia entry so I think his legend status is assured even outside the Caribbean.

Back to the actual cricket. Mark Wood has cranked up the pace on the speedometer and arrests the run rate somewhat with a tight over, with just one taken from it.

Darren Dyer: bringing up the legend that is Gravy in their live text commentary is content I'm here for. I used to love watching him dancing around the old Recreation Ground in the 90s. Proper entertainment.

  8. WI 35-0published at 7.0 overs

A lot of love for Broad and Anderson out there it seems. Joe Root, it must be noted, has diplomatically said England will be stronger for giving some other bowlers a go knowing they can all upon the experienced pair.

Craig Overton dispatched for two boundaries in the seventh over by Kraigg Brathwaite down the ground.

Plain sailing in the breeze at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium for the West Indies so far.

Mark Burt: Suspect Anderson and Broad will be ready to combust. Woakes with an eye watering away bowling average of 52 and currently going at 7 per over.

  10. WI 27-0published at 5.5 overs

Mark Wood getting into his rhythm here. He manages to clip the pad of John Campbell prompting a flicker of interest from the England slip cordon.

It was full in length from Wood but that ball was sliding down leg side.

Jam Barrell: I'm a huge fan of Woakes and I've nothing against Overton - but there's something a bit unspectacular about them as an opening partnership. Prove me wrong lads!

  12. WI 26-0published at 5.0 overs

Chris Woakes lets on slip on to Kraigg Brathwait's pads and is punished again before the West Indies skipper punches one down the ground for three.

Joe Root set to make a change with Mark Wood warming up to bowl the next over.

  13. WI 21-0published at 4.0 overs

That was an expensive over from Woakes and an aggressive start from West Indies as we tick towards lunch.

Craig Overton with a relatively nonthreatening half dozen which the West Indies openers are happy to milk for a couple of singles.

If you're of a younger generation and wondering who Gravy is (see entry 3:38pm) let me introduce you to Mr Labon Kenneth Blackburn Leeweltine Buckonon Benjamin.

The Antiguan is part of cricketing folklore and used to entertain the crowds at Test matches with all manner of outlandish costumes and dancing.

In fact, there's a piece on him from the BBC archives here.

  15. WI 10-0published at 2.3 overs

A mixed bag from Chris Woakes in his second over. An absolute beauty first up as he beats the outside edge of John Campbell's bat with a wobble seam.

However, Campbell responds by biffing a short ball from Woakes for four then follows it up a couple of balls later with a whack over midwicket.

About 15 minutes from lunch now.

    Carlos Brathwaite
West Indies all-rounder on BT Sport

West Indies are in a similar position to England with their batting. They are one or two wickets from being in a 48-4 like situation.

  17. WI 5-0published at 2.0 overs

Craig Overton preferred to Mark Wood with the new ball and he starts in solid if unspectacular fashion. John Campbell gets off the mark off the final ball of the over.

digitalmigrant: Yesterday, when Eng were 57-4, you could be forgiven for thinking - here we go again, 150 all out. Mike Gatting would have given several cheese rolls and a whole picnic to see Eng. get to 300+ and bat for 100 overs. Chapeau Jonny Bairstow!

  19. WI 4-0published at 0.5 overs

Chris Woakes with the new ball for England and he is dependably in the fourth and fifth stump line. Not much swing so far.

The penultimate ball of the over is a little fuller and West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite fancies a bit. He drives confidently down the ground for four jolting the loudspeakers into life as the tunes blare out.

Someone get Gravy back out there. Just for old times' sake.

England are promptly out in the field eager to get under way.

No Stuart Broad and James Anderson here, of course, so it will be interesting to see how England's attack cope without two of their bowling heavyweights with 1,117 Test wickets between them.
