This pitch is making think how glad I am live-texting wasn't a thing when Brian Lara was racking up those two mammoth innings against England. This is tough enough.

Brathwaite fails to muster anything with his loopy off-breaks.

This pitch is sucking the life out of the West Indies attack, just as it did with England's yesterday.

Kraigg Brathwaite has brought himself on for a bit of part-time off-spin.

  4. Eng 113-1published at 41 overs

    Crawley 58, Root 43

Jayden Seales returns, finding a little bit of uneven bounce from the pitch. Root has it covered though.

The England skipper ends the over with the most textbook of drives. The slow surface means it's only a couple, however.

Darren Stevens' name gets dragged through the mud a lot for a man just earning a living.

An England fan who may or may not have had a rum or two joins in with ground's dancers. There's plenty of effort but I'm not sure Len Goodman would be impressed.

It's a maiden from Holder to restart proceedings.

Tim L-G: The more Crawley plays for England, the less he plays for Kent on pitches prepared for Darren Stevens, and the better he will get.

Joshua da Silva. standing up to the stumps now, seems to be calling Kemar Roach 'Slider'. Your guess is as good as mine.

    That'll be drinks.

Craig proving the spirit of cricket is well and truly dead, there. Quite right too.

Fielding for the opposition as they were a man down. My captain at the crease needing a six to win off the last ball. Caught it on the boundary. Stepped over the rope. We won.

What's that phrase about buses? Joe Root flicks the first ball of Jason Holder's comeback over to the boundary.

  12. Eng 104-1published at 37 overs

    Crawley 57, Root 35

Jason Holder is particularly vocal today, clapping and shouting away at slip. He may not be the captain anymore but he's the one leading the encouragement to the bowlers.

Kemar Roach builds the dots again before Zak Crawley drives down the ground at the of the over. That's the first boundary in a long while.

Still lots of batting to do for England - they're making it look extremely comfortable at the moment, though. They could be 160-170 ahead by close of play - it would set up a fascinating last day.

England won't need reminding how troublesome elbow injuries can be for fast bowlers. Just ask Jofra Archer.

"Not quite timed," may be the most used phrase in this session so far.

The ECB have sent an update on Mark Wood - he's going to keep getting treatment throughout this innings until he's called upon to bat.

England are still hopeful that he can bowl in the second innings - they're not sending him for a scan on his elbow issue as it stands, or looking to call up any replacements.

Again a ball scuttles low from wide of the stumps, stinging the fingertips of Windies keeper Joshua da Silva. England still a couple of byes to nudge towards 100.

On TV they're cutting to people asleep in the crowd. I say no more.

  17. Eng 96-1published at 34 overs

Alzarri Joseph continues the patient, slightly defensive approach of hanging the ball wide. This pitch will not be winning the Cricket Pitch Oscars, or whatever you'd call such an award.

When Crawley's good he's good. There's no doubt about that. It's the other bits that worry me. I'm not sure I've phrased that very well but you may understand my point.

In this over he lets one delivery that scuttles low go by. Thankfully it was wide of the stumps or there'd have been trouble.

Of the all the disappointing, underachieving and frustrating young batters we have, Zak Crawley currently looks the least disappointing, underachieving and frustrating.
