Veerasammy Permaul on a flat one is probably the ideal bowler (no disrespect) for Zak Crawley to reach the century mark against.

Though with multiple sweepers out now they are not giving it to him easily.

He only manages two singles off the latest over, both to deep cover.

I'm more excited about Zak Crawley than I have been for any England debutant in the last 15 years, other than Root. Great technique!

I wonder how much of a lead captain Root wants here?

I'd have thought he would want to bat until lunch tomorrow (300-odd lead?) then put the Windies in to have two final sessions for a slim chance of bowling them out.

Then again I would never have set the Ashes fields for Leach that Root set, what do I know?

Crawley goes across his stumps and West Indies go up in appeal for lbw...

...but that was going down the legside and he gets through for a leg-bye.

The hosts wisely opt against a review.

  5. Eng 176-1published at 55 overs

Zak Crawley passes 1,000 Test match runs.

He averaged 28.21 before this knock.

A one off Permaul takes him to 95 not out.

  6. Eng 174-1published at 53 overs

Root starving Crawley of the strike as the skipper relatively races onto 68* off 128 balls, quite different from Nkrumah Bonner's knock.

Crawley is still 94* as Root sees out a maiden from Joseph to check his progress.

Good over though to be fair.

Root on the paddle-sweep is a lovely sight.

Permaul being pummelled around the ground at ease. That's the 150 stand between Root & Crawley.

Permaul was picked for his consistency in first-class cricket but he's not really showing it now.

Not a big turner of the ball so easy to face.

A draw feels pretty much nailed on, but you never know, that's the beauty of Test cricket.

  9. Eng 169-1published at 52 overs

    Crawley 94*

A seriously thick edge from Zak Crawley gets Alzarri Shaheim Joseph pulling a seriously unhappy pout at the Kent batter.

Next ball is nailed for four like a roofer hitting a six-inch-nail straight through a rafter in one hit. The ball races to the point boundary.

    Nine from the over.

    Crawley racing into the 90s!

If England had been knocked over today on this dead pitch, there would have been serious questions asked. It's good to see Zak Crawley cementing his place at the top order having not started the winter there.

  11. Eng 160-1published at 51 overs

Slim chance of a run out, but Root is safe, nearly as quick as long-legged Crawley, though neither anywhere near as quick as the aforementioned Bairstow I must add.

Both batters hit boundaries in an 11-run over!

  12. Eng 149-1published at 50 overs

Another nicely-timed flick through mid-wicket for Crawley (how many times have we said that today?)

Just the one though, two off the over.

There was the capacity for England to be knocked over today - with confidence very low, and lots of frailty about the batting, starting 64 behind, this could have turned out to be very ugly.

But this has been impressive from England.

This has been a good day for England, but I think the pitch is likely to turn out the winner in this match.

There's no room for complacency still - England will have to bat until lunch tomorrow, and maybe even beyond that.

Just asked my family (none of them interested in cricket at all) chat if they had any topics of wisdom to keep you all interested.

My sister replied: "The wordle was hard today."

    That's all folks.

(Do we agree?! Maybe I should attempt said wordle myself first..)

West Indies all-rounder on BT Sport

If Zak Crawley can get that consistency and discipline on when to play and when to leave the ball, then with his power and shot-making, he'll be a very dangerous player at the top of the order for England for years.

Zak Crawley has to tighten up his method and his judgement around off-stump if he's to have a successful international career. He can't just wait for batting-friendly conditions.

He's had to bat well today. But it's an easy pitch to bat on.

He should look to Joe Root's approach for the consistency and discipline he needs.
