  1. WI 55-0published at 23 overs

Leach was one ball from a maiden but Brathwaite rocks back and punches his last delivery into the offside for one.

He's been unlucky this Test, Crawley unfortunately dropping twice off Leach's bowling so far.

Stokes to bowl from t'other end.

  2. Not outpublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 12 March 2022

Campbell went down to sweep...the ball is close to bat and gloves...

UltraEdge shows a spike, thus not out and Campbell gets two more to his total that they ran.

  3. England reviewpublished at 22 overs

Joe Root continues with his alice band.

John Campbell unfurls a sweep and Root goes up in appeal for lbw.

He really likes this and opts to review.

Mark Burt: The glaring inadequacy of England’s attack is being exposed now. They don’t look like taking a wicket at the moment.

Leach continues to the left-handed Campbell after drinks.

A filthty heave/swipe loops over Stokes at mid on. It confuses me after so many defensive shots - are they going for this 286 to win or not?!

It's followed by a beautiful cover drive for four right along the carpet.

    Cheers Matt.

Who am I to doubt the England skipper...but should he be our second or third spin option this match?

Is Lawrence not a more threatening, more useful bowler than Root? He has a lot of Essex scalps in recent years.

Both bowl similar pace and wrist action, but the off-putting nature of Lawrence’s action potentially makes him more threatening..?

More variation from Lawrence too to tempt a wicket on a flat one?

There's not much spin out there for Leach, who's bowled steadily. Root is keeping the field up to encourage the West Indians to play shots and keep their interest in the game.

Well that was one of the more low-key periods of play I can remember. After I gave it the big build-up too.

Harry Everett is here to take over from me. What was it D:Ream said? Things can only get...

  9. drinks break

    WI 43-0published at 20 overs

    Target 286

Some fast hands from Ben Foakes whip off the bails as Kraigg Brathwaite lurches out of his crease. The square-leg umpire shakes his head very quickly, despite Foakes trying his best to persuade otherwise.

    Brathwaite was comfortably home.

That'll be drinks with a wicketless hour over and done with.

It's time for a bit of spin from Joe Root himself.

  11. WI 42-0published at 19 overs

Ooof. Jack Leach's returns brings a spurt of action as Brathwaite goes for a crazy sweep from the over's first ball. He misses and is very nearly bowled.

England have plenty to say about the stroke, you know the stuff I mean, and Brathwaite tentatively fiddles outside off, again missing, a ball later.

In fairness the West Indies captain does clip four at the end of the over in much more assured fashion.

Aggers has his wish. Jack Leach returns from the other end.

  13. WI 38-0published at 18 overs

Chris Woakes' latest over ends with the ball thudding into the middle of John Campbell's bat. It's ominous, I must say.

Woakes shaped to throw back at Campbell and the stumps in his follow-through during that over. Campbell must know the nicest man in cricket would never do such a thing.

  14. WI 34-0published at 17 overs

Good question. I assume for the same reason but I don't think England have ever said so. Jack Leach is out the attack for now anyway, Overton and Woakes bowling in tandem. Get Stokes on, Joe.

Cricket captain: Any ideas as to why Ben Stokes isn't catching at slip for the spinners? I assume his fragile claw hands keep him out of the cordon for the quicks.

  16. WI 32-0published at 16 overs

    Brathwaite 20, Campbell 10

Jonny Bairstow, standing at mid-wicket, has just gone up for one of the most ambitious lbw appeals I have ever seen. I don't think it would have hit two more sets. Even umpire Joel Wilson sees the funny side.

There's a fair bit of ooohing and ahhhing from England's fielders but not much threat.

  17. WI 29-0published at 15 overs

After I suggested West Indies might be going for the chase a few overs ago they have hardly played a shot in anger. John Campbell has eight from 44 balls. The required rate is now up over 4.5.

I was all for Joe Root's declaration. The rain last night made it more challenging for him, he might've wanted more runs, but it definitely had to happen before lunch.

  19. WI 27-0published at 14 overs

How long until Joe Root gives Dan Lawrence a sneaky go? I wouldn't wait too long. Ben Stokes must surely come on soon.

The Crawley drop is the only chance England have created. Oh how they could do with Mark Wood here. Craig Overton is at least keeping the scoring to a minimum.
