Declarations are easily made in the commentary boxes, press box and amongst the crowd. But not so for the captain who makes the decision. This is an unusual but ambitious declaration, even more so because Root is a frontline bowler down, that could pay off.

Joe Root is nine Test centuries short of Sir Alastair Cook's England record. He's only 31.

Despite the loss of five wickets, England added 132 runs in the morning session. Dan Lawrence's enterprising cameo of 37 from 35 balls was the highlight.

Joe Root moved to his century but that almost goes without saying these days.

    Thanks Ffion!

This declaration caught me by surprise. Very bold. It certainly keeps things interesting.

It will be a challenge for England to take all 10 wickets - the pitch is very flat and slow, and there's no Mark Wood to inject a bit of pace into it.

Anyway, I will leave you in the hands of Matthew Henry to take you through the lunch break and part of the afternoon session. Bye for now!

John Campbell played Jack Leach very well to start there. That's not a good sign for England if there isn't turn out of the rough, because then it's going to be a long day.

  10. Lunch - WI 4-0published at 4 overs

    Target 286

John Campbell and Kraigg Brathwaite get through a tricky 10 minutes unscathed and they take West Indies to lunch requiring another 282 runs to win from around 66 overs.

An intriguing opening session that saw Joe Root's 24th Test century, a flurry of England wickets and a bold declaration. Nicely set up for an exciting finish.

Some swing for Chris Woakes but Brathwaite negotiates it with relative ease.

We'll have time to sneak in one more Leach over before lunch.

David Emmanuel: I really like this aggressive declaration decision - probably still a draw but just enough of a chance for both teams.

  13. WI 4-0published at 2 overs

    Target 286

There's an lbw appeal on John Campbell as Leach finds a bit of turn into the left hander, but not a particularly convincing one.

A testing maiden from Leach to start.

Let’s hope England are Pug-nacious and grab this game by the scrufts of its neck.

A solid start from the West Indies as they keep up with the run rate after one over.

Jack Leach is going to share new ball duties with Chris Woakes. Interesting.

Chris Woakes' first ball doesn't trouble Brathwaite as it drifts down the leg side, before the batter gets the scoring underway with three runs clipped through the leg side.

A reminder that West Indies need 286 from 70 overs. Anyway, back to the most important topic of conversation here - dog/Crufts/cricket crossovers...

England have just confirmed that Mark Wood will not play any further part in this Test. He tried to bowl in the nets before today’s play but struggled with acute pain after bowling approximately six deliveries.

A big blow for Root, that. Ollie Pope is on as a substitute fielder for now, as Kraigg Brathwaite and John Campbell get themselves ready in the middle.

Chris Woakes has the new ball.

What do we reckon, then? Will West Indies go for this total? I like it from Root though - an aggressive declaration, you'd say.

But without Wood, can England take 10 wickets?
