  1. Eng 386-4published at 122 overs

    Stokes 98, Bairstow 4

West Indies have the field spread in defensive mode. It's just a single for England's all-rounder courtesy of a punch down the ground. Again, Jonny Bairstow nips in at the end of the over to keep the strike. He hasn't read the script, has he?

  2. Eng 384-4published at 121.2 overs

A poor bit of fielding brings Ben Stokes back onto strike on 97 not out. Is this the over?

Ben Stokes has been a little becalmed by the loss of Joe Root.

  4. Eng 383-4published at 121 overs

Jonny Bairstow steals the strike at the end of the over, a blow to those of you updating between work meetings in the hope of knowing Stokes has got to his century.

For someone like Ben Stokes the hundred is a proud moment but as England's vice-captain he'll have the whole game situation very much in his mind as well.

  6. Eng 381-4published at 120.3 overs

    Careful...

Stokes nails a drive off Jayden Seales. It's arrowing towards mid-off but bounces just short.

Ben: Joe Root is a prolific run scorer and he’s a world-class batter but definitely has a small problem with the ball that comes back into him. Pat Cummins definitely had him on toast with the one that nips back. Nonetheless another unreal innings from our skipper.

  8. Eng 381-4published at 120 overs

The first real sign of intent from Stokes in this session comes with a flick off the toes but it's far from the big-hitting shots we saw before lunch.

He's within one hit of his ton on 96 not out.

Jonny Bairstow's ginger beard is looking particularly well-shaped today. Maybe he knows the photographers are going to get plenty of shots of him raising his bat today. He leaves his IPL team-mate Jason Holder alone outside off.

It was a good, busy innings from Root, but not a chanceless one. He played second fiddle to Lawrence and then Stokes, but was disappointed to get out missing a straight one.

  12. Eng 375-4published at 118 overs

    Stokes 92, Bairstow 1

Jonny Bairstow is off the mark early. I wonder whether the loss of Root will just check Ben Stokes' attacking flow for a little while.

No batter ever looks pleased to get out, but even with 153 runs to his name, Root is frustrated knowing that a double hundred was there for the taking.

"Na na na naaa, Joe Rooot," sing the England fans as Root removes his helmet.

He waves his bat towards all sides before disappearing up the stairs to the dressing room.

    Root lbw b Roach 153 (Eng 373-4)

Joe Root is out. I repeat, Joe Root is out.

I'm not sure why this wasn't given out straight away, Root has missed a straight ball from Kemar Roach and is absolutely plumb.

The Kensington Oval rises to applaud the England captain.

  17. West Indies reviewpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2022

    Oooo.

If Joe Root hasn't got an inside edge on this lbw shout he could be in trouble.

West Indies confidently call for a review.

  18. Eng 373-3published at 117 overs

Unsurprisingly the field is spread with Holder bowling straight in one-day mode. Stokes and Root ease their way to three more singles in the over - all of them gentle.

The crowd is in afternoon snooze mode but it won't take much to spark them into life.

  19. Eng 370-3published at 116.1 overs

Stokes takes a single from the first ball, an anti-climax if ever I saw one.

  20. Eng 369-3published at 116 overs

Ah here we go. Jason Holder has the ball in hand. Ben Stokes is on strike on 89 from 92 balls.
