    A brief debate with my colleague Matthew Henry yesterday about Joe Root's position in the pantheon of great England batters

    While he is undoubtedly a class player I can't quite consider Root the greatest ever. At least not yet.

    Thumbing a copy of Wisden Cricketers' Almanack last night I noted Root only has one score in the top 20 knocks by Englishmen.

    With a pitch offering nothing and a tired attack might today be the day he can compile something which puts him into the top 10? That might just be enough to persuade me.
