    Verma c Brunt b Ecclestone 63 (IndW 99-2)

Whadda catch! What a brilliant catch! One that might change the course of this Test.

Katherine Brunt has taken a stunner at long-on to get rid of Shafali Verma.

It's disgusting from Sophie Ecclestone, a waist-high full toss, that Verma miscues. Brunt, running in, dives forward, and grasps the ball just above the turf.

    Magnificent.

At the start, perhaps because of early, gloom-induced nerves, the beat provided by the India fans was kept to between overs or to celebrate a boundary. In the last couple of overs they’ve provided a continuous backing track throughout. Lovely stuff and a sign of growing confidence?

Shafali Verma and Rohit Sharma batting at the same time is quite something, isn't it?

India know they can't let Sophie Ecclestone get into her stride - Shafali Verma latched straight on to that. What a shot!

    Fetch it!

Shafali Verma is an absolute superstar.

Straight back over Ecclestone's head for six.

Oooohhhh, that's lovely from Deepti. Full and wide from Shrubsole, with the left-handed leaning on a square drive.

You can see the New Zealanders are look a little uptight and that's understandable because of the occasion, this is such an important game for them.

Stylistically the two sides are very contrasting, the way they play the game. India are like a royal flush if you're a pack of cards while New Zealand rely on team-work, discipline and those kind of fundamentals.

On the subject of multi-tasking, has anyone considered going to both of these Tests? Bristol today, Southampton tomorrow?

Kyle Jamieson is on for New Zealand, greeted by a glorious straight drive from Shubman Gill.

I once played and won a UAU universities final at Lord's indoor centre on the Saturday, played a clarinet masterclass with Jack Brymer on the Sunday and wrote a rescheduled final exam on the Monday. Was a busy, memorable and successful three days.

Shafali Verma has played one false shot to Sophie Ecclestone already this morning - we only saw one in the whole of her innings yesterday.

There goes Shafali Verma. Pitched up from spinner Ecclestone and Verma gives it the beans. An aerial drive could have gone anywhere, but instead slides off the face of the bat and lands safely in the covers.

What we're seeing is New Zealand pitching the ball up as they did against England. Whereas England couldn't handle that, India are watching the ball closely and picking the fuller deliveries.

  13. IndM 37-0published at 11:11 British Summer Time 19 June 2021

Pursed lips and furrowed brows from the New Zealanders. They know they haven't got it quite right so far today. There is a pressure when you win the toss and choose to field.

    Ooofffft.

That was a smidgen of a chance. Down the leg side from Shrubsole, with Deepti overbalancing. Could have been a stumping opportunity for Amy Jones, who is up to the stumps, but she couldn't gather. If she'd taken it, it would have been a worldie.

    I think it's India 1-0 New Zealand.

It was a decent toss to win, the right decision was made by New Zealand and the right team was selected. With the pitch, the rain, the clouds, it all says bowl. Especially when your main threat is movement.

Early days but this has been an impressive start from India in conditions New Zealand would have created for themselves if such a thing was possible.

As you’d expect, every run is being cheered. The India fans have drums, a saxophone, hooters, the works.

The Bharats are feeling the beat in Southampton. Lovely noise from the beat of the drum. There's fancy dress too. Four chaps are dresses as Teletubbies. Great start by India. Time for a change of bowling?
