Ishant, feet nailed to the ground, swings at Southee and gets a couple through the covers. When he tries to leave one, Ishant still manages to hit the ball with the toe of the bat. He's playing all the right strokes, but not necessarily in the right order.

It was going away from him past his left shoulder, it almost beat him for pace actually. He'll be disappointed with that because they've caught brilliantly.

    Put down!

Do not adjust your screen, New Zealand have actually dropped a catch.

Ravi Jadeja poking at Trent Boult, Tim Southee shelling it at third slip.

    Catchable. Very catchable.

A number of the Bharat Army are staying in my hotel. I'm yet to spot the saxophone player in the bar on an evening which is a shame. He's providing a lovely backing track to this session.

Ishant Sharma is the new man. New Zealand will feel like they are into the tail. Plenty resting on Jadeja, who has been subdued. Lunch is on the horizon. It's been New Zealand's morning. During the break, TMS will be hearing from ICC chief executive Geoff Allardice.

Good persistence from Southee with that fuller length even though Ashwin got a couple away. New Zealand have definitely won this morning session.

    Ashwin c Latham b Southee 22 (Ind 205-7)

    Another!

R Ashwin was ticking along, but Tim Southee has suckered him in. Full swinging away, a drive results in an edge.

Tom Latham does the rest at second slip. New Zealand just don't drop anything, do they?

You'd have thought Jadeja would be the more flamboyant of these two, but with Ashwin if it's up there it's off at the moment.

  9. Ind 205-6published at 12:48 British Summer Time 20 June 2021

The India 200 sparks a party in Southampton. Virat Kohli is on the balcony whistling and hollering. Ashwin celebrates with a crunching back-foot drive for four, the sort Tendulkar would be proud of.

    Jadeja 11, Ashwin 16

The Bharat Army are feeling the beat. This is an important little period in the game. New Zealand would have hoped to make more progress with the second new ball, but instead India are counter-punching. There's about 15 minutes to go until lunch.

Both these players look as if they want to play more positively against the new ball.

  14. Ind 198-6published at 12:40 British Summer Time 20 June 2021

Edged over the slips! A big flash from Ashwin at Southee sees the ball fly over De Grandhomme. New Zealand have asked the umpires to look at the ball, too. How odd - it's only a couple of overs old. Perhaps the Kiwis aren't happy with how this one is behaving. It is swinging, though.

Colin de Grandhomme in the field is a bit like a large animal being taken down by a tranquilizer dart.

  16. Ind 190-6published at 12:34 British Summer Time 20 June 2021

Boult scurries in, but the line isn't right, allowing Ashwin a tuck off the pads for four. Colin de Grandhomme should have stopped it, but he was groping around on the floor at square leg.

This pitch is still a bit two-paced. Watling has just taken that ball from Boult at head height.

Off comes Neil Wagner after taking this wicket of Ajinkya Rahane. Trent Boult is on...

  19. Ind 182-6published at 12:29 British Summer Time 20 June 2021

Here it is then, the new rock in the hands of Tim Southee. When it gets driven to mid-on Trent Boult, he inspects it like it's a precious stone. Southee has bowled two full-tosses there. Not the best use of the new pill.

I guess the thinking is that the old ball is still doing a bit, and if Wagner's tactic is banging the ball in the middle of the pitch then it's better to do that with an old one.
