Chirag: How cool would it have been for the WTC final to have been a 'Timeless Test'?

Barneveldt Johannsen: Regret this is a damp squib. Replay in good weather.

With Kane Williamson gone Tim Southee, meanwhile, has seen this a chance to play with a touch more joie de vivre. Not quite with the wanton abandon of Kyle Jamieson earlier but he's looking to capitalise. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is into the attack, drops one a little short, and Southee clobbers him through backward point for four. Every run vital for New Zealand now.

Every time New Zealand have started to feel comfortable, India have struck. Brilliant game.

He's almost hit that off the face of the bat. He's opened the face enough to get it to the slips. He batted a long, long time.

    Williamson c Kohli b Sharma 49 (NZ 221-8)

A huge wicket! Ishant Sharma is back on the money and keeps Kane Williamson honest by targeting the stumps. With the final ball of the over he then teases the New Zealand skipper with a slightly wider one and Williamson opens the face and the ball flashes to the slips. Kohli is on hand with a fine grab at a wide fourth slip position.

OptaJim: 2 - Kane Williamson has now surpassed Stephen Fleming's record of 7,172 Test runs to become the second-highest run-getter for the Black Caps in this format. Only Ross Taylor (7,517) has scored more runs than the New Zealand skipper. Milestone.

The New Zealand fans have their shirts off and are waving them above their heads as their side moves into the lead.

  10. NZ 220-7published at 15:52 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Kane Williamson briefly breaks free of his defensive shackles. A flagging Mohammed Shami bowls too short and Williamson gets over the top of the ball and cuts it clinically for four. Shami puts his hand over his eyes. That boundary takes New Zealand past India's first innings total of 217 all out.

  12. NZ 213-7published at 15:47 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Kane Williamson's expression has flickered between stone faced and extremely focused. He is concentration personified. He does some gentle gardening, checks the field before offering a stoic defensive shot to keep out a full ball from Ishant Sharma.

Here's the Viking-esque Kyle Jamieson, plundering a towering six before being bounced out by Mohammed Shami.

Former India captain on BBC Test Match Special

There's still a fair bit of play left today. Things can turn around. If New Zealand can lead by 30 or 40, then have India bat for an hour, they could cause problems. I'm concerned for India.

  15. NZ 211-7published at 15:42 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

With the final ball of the over Mohammed Shami deceives Tim Southee with a subtle change of pace and draws a leading edge. Two India fielders scamper in pursuit of the catch but the ball plonks to safety.

As if preparing to do a limbo dance Tim Southee leans back, except he is taking evasive action to a short ball from Mohammed Shami. He is stuck on the back and the ball races away for four leg byes.

  17. NZ 205-7published at 15:36 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Tim Southee plays positively and he picks up a couple of runs off Jasprit Bumrah to help New Zealand reduce the deficit to 12 runs

  18. NZ 202-7published at 15:33 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Mohammed Shami is busy on his approach to the crease and keeps trying to make it talk back of a length. He bowls too straight to Kane Williamson, though, who clips it round the corner for four. Tim Southee backs away before jabbing the ball for a single to bring New Zealand up to the 200 mark.

Kane Williamson is still there, though. He cut Shami for a tasty four earlier.
