  1. NZ 144-5published at 14:21 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Interesting move from Virat Kohli as left-arm spinner Ravi Jadeja is introduced. Kane Williamson pinches a single and India's fielders scatter to the boundary when Colin de Grandhomme is on strike. The all-rounder, mullet hanging out the back of his helmet, does not take the bait and is happy to milk a few singles.

De Grandhomme is a languid player - a quick 30 from him could change the rhythm of what's happened today. It's a bit like Pant, who's able to break up a game.

  3. NZ 139-5published at 14:17 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

A nice gentle half-volley first up from Jasprit Bumrah for Colin de Grandhomme, who crisply dispatches it to the boundary. He's a bit more watchful for the rest of the over but he is clearly going to play his natural game despite the bowler-friendly conditions.

There's so much scrutiny over bowlers' lengths - but there's this critical length that's been picked up by both teams, especially India who have bowled that little bit fuller.

India's players are now back out on the field as we prepare for the afternoon session. Kane Williamson and Colin de Grandhomme are the unbeaten men at the crease for New Zealand.

With India were now firmly on top at 134-4, Kane Williamson pulled down the shutters with lunch in sight. BJ Watling, in his final Test, strode out to join his captain but lasted just three balls as Mohammed Shami found a way through his defence to clean bowl him for a duck.

Virat Kohli celebrated Taylor's wicket by punching the air and gesticulating to the crowd. He sensed the initiative could be seized. That brought Henry Nicholls to the crease with India's tails were up. Nicholls managed to take the pressure off with a boundary but the return of Sharma did for him. The India seamer angled the ball into the left-hander and nipped it away to find the edge - Rohit Sharma catching well in the slips.

India's patience eventually paid off as Ross Taylor departed for 11, drawn into a drive to a fuller ball from the impressive Mohammed Shami with Shubman Gill taking a superb diving catch.

It was attritional batting for New Zealand from the off, as Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson faced disciplined bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma first up. Although the India pair were a little guilty of bowling too wide and the New Zealanders seemed content to leave the ball as they looked to build a platform. Williamson did eventually find the boundary, though, after Bumrah strayed on to his legs and the Black Caps skipper clipped it for four.

Thanks Steph. For long periods that was, perhaps, a session of Test cricket for the purists. Kane Williamson resumed this morning on 12* and has added just seven runs to his total. India will certainly feel the happier of the two sides over their lunch.

A lot of cricket still to be played. In these conditions, with these bowlers, just a small error can get you out. India haven't given New Zealand anything to hit. It felt like a very long session, but a really good session of cricket. Can New Zealand get a partnership to get them up close to India?

  17. Lunch - NZ 135-5published at 13:33 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

What a session. India threw everything at New Zealand, the score has barely moved and the Black Caps eventually buckled.

Looking again, Watling has made that ball seem better than it was. He played down the wrong line and it hit middle-and-off. If Virat Kohli jumps around any more, he'll take off. One over to go before lunch...
