New Zealand might think the way out this is to play a few shots. After Shami whistles one past his nose, Nicholls responds with a flashing cut for four. We've got half an hour to go before lunch,

India will be looking to target Henry Nicholls now. Kane Williamson hasn't scored many runs but looks solid in defence. If they can open up one end, India will have a chance of moving this game along.

It feels like a wicket could come with every ball. Even the unflappable Kane Williamson is flirting outside the off stump. India fans raise the noise once more. Kolhi claps is hands above his head and urges on the crowd. Theatre.

Lift off in Southampton. Kohli celebrated that wicket with a vicious punch of the air. He then turned to celebrate towards the other side of the ground. He's up for it.

Henry Nicholls is the new man. India might think that a couple of quick wickets have them right in with a chance of winning this game. When the left-hander leaves one outside off stump, it scuttles through and past Rishabh Pant for four byes.

An excellent catch but look at the length Shami bowled - it was a driving length. This is where the Indian bowlers should have been bowling, encouraging the batsmen to drive. Yes, India do not have many runs on the board but they need to put the ball in those areas.

    India's reward!

Ross Taylor has battled for an hour, only to throw it away with a loose shot. An uppish drive at Mohammed Shami, well held low to his right by Shubman Gill at shortish mid-off.

    An opening?

Back after drinks. Bumrah to Williamson. A maiden. We're only 17 overs away from a second new ball.

Kane Williamson has scored two singles in the last 58 balls he has faced. Mohammed Shami meanwhile has bowled the shortest of all the bowlers in this match - bowling too short is something he has been accused of doing in his career and not giving the ball the chance to move more and find the edge.

England captain Eoin Morgan: "We are using these white-ball games both to grow the squad and utilise positions we might see available in the T20 World Cup.

"A lot of the options we look at for the next four weeks will be a serious and genuine look at the players for World Cup selection down the line."

There's an Indian fan with some binoculars. Next to him a chap in a New Zealand shirt is peering through the bottom of two plastic beer glasses. Superb. It's been brought to my attention that I'm sometimes a bit mean to our Matthew Henry. It's a sign of affection. Plus, many years ago, I helped him get a job with the BBC after he came in on work experience on the understanding I'd get 5% of his future earnings. I've not seen a penny.

Ross Taylor is prone to losing his shape outside off stump. The crowd sense there is something about to happen for India here.

  18. NZ 117-2published at 12:26 British Summer Time 22 June 2021

Ooofffttt! This has taken off! Ishant to Taylor, popping off the glove, down the leg side and just beyond flying wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. The second boundary of the day. The first one, a little earlier, was more aesthetically pleasing....

Shami has got a yellow towel poking out the back of his trousers. It's potentially the brightest thing in Southampton at the moment. Taylor scratches at his guard, digging a trench. New Zealand are trying to build a platform. If they bat time, the chances of them losing diminish, allowing the chance to attack later.

It's a bit of a slow start to the day, but it's going to take a while to get runs on this surface I think. India will be desperate for early wickets but New Zealand have thwarted that so far by leaving the ball well. I think we know deep down the way the game is going, but if someone takes a hat-trick for India or something it could swing it back their way.
