I'll take that for my first away Ashes session - 2-80 seems a decent return.

England need to keep going and find more breakthroughs, and restrict the scoring, in the evening session.

Matt Henry will take you through that.

Warner is 94 not out at tea. He only made 95 runs in 10 innings in the 2019 series in England.

Travis Head is at the other end, and is yet to face.

It has not been Warner's prettiest or most belligerent innings but it has been determined.

After a 9-0 scoreline across England's last two visits, the atmosphere in the press box is fast becoming one of resignation. Even the Australians would rather see a contest. The handful of UK representatives are the most savage about England. The standout line so far: "To be fair, Leach has been unlucky. That he got picked."

    Time for a break.

England only bowled 23 overs in that session, but it was a slightly better one for them.

They have found two wickets, and conceded 80 runs.

Warner had one of those series in England where he nicked everything. He is about even now after today.

Warner played that with very soft hands. It was fortuitous to find the gap.

David Warner has had some luck today. He is half-squared up again and a thick edge - albeit along the ground - goes just past Rory Burns and away to the boundary.

    He's up to 94...

Here's how Jack Leach got the wicket of Marnus Labuschagne.

England get carried away with Smith's ability. That was just a normal ball.

There was nothing special about that ball. Even Steve Smith can nick a straight ball.

    Smith c Buttler b Wood 12 (Aus 189-3)

This is NOT a drill. England have got Steve Smith OUT!

Mark Wood really deserves this - he has been bowled really well today.

It is just a standard fifth-stump line and Smith has a little prod and gets a thin edge through to Jos Buttler.

This is a small opening for England now.

    Lovely.

Mark Wood goes wide on the crease with an exaggerated leap, but it is a juicy half-volley and Steve Smith drives through mid-off for a glorious four.

His best shot so far. He's up to 12 off 16.

Warner's footwork is all over the place. He has been hopping around like a cat on a hot tin roof.

Ollie Robinson starts with another maiden - he's bowled seven in 13 overs now.

He squares David Warner up first up, before beating the outside edge later in the over as the Australia opener has a little prod.

Robinson needs to get a bit fuller to get the outside edge, though.

Wood has done a pretty fair job. He has done well enough to take a wicket but it is a concern that the main bowlers have done a lot of bowling. The batsmen down the order will be able to take advantage. This seems to happen with Root. He is not a good captain but he is not a lucky captain.

  17. Postpublished at 04:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Joe Root has seen enough of Jack Leach for now. He did provide the breakthrough, but Australia were targeting him and runs were flowing.

Ollie Robinson, who got the initial breakthrough this morning (see below), is back on.

Just two singles from Mark Wood's 12th over. He's bowled well so far but without reward.

Smith is complaining he ran into Wood but Wood hasn't done anything to get in the way of Smith. If I was the umpire I'd have said "bad luck, pal".
