  1. What have you missed?published at 05:29 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Well, England's bowlers - not helped by the fielders - are doing their best to fight their way back into this Test match.

The day started well for the tourists with Ollie Robinson having Marcus Harris caught in the slips for three.

David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne then shared 156 for the second wicket but were England were guilty of not helping themselves with Ben Stokes bowling Warner off a no-ball on 17, before Rory Burns dropped him on 48 and Haseeb Hameed missed a chance to run him out at short leg.

But England have fought back well in the last hour or so. Jack Leach - who has been attacked by Australia and hit for five sixes - dismissed Labuschagne for 74 before Steve Smith had a rare Ashes failure, being caught behind off Mark Wood for 12.

Those wickets were before tea, and then Ollie Robinson had Warner caught in the covers for 94 and bowled Cameron Green in successive balls post interval.

Australia have surpassed England's first-innings total of 147 and have built a lead of more than 50. A few more wickets tonight though...

I've just seen Ben Stokes warming up.

It's a maiden to begin the spell from Chris Woakes. You can't criticise any of the England seamers today - Ben Stokes included.

Yes! He might be blowing though but crikey I'd have been like "come onnnn, this is the moment. Give me another six balls".

I'm a bit disappointed they didn't find another over for Mark Wood there because he seemed to have the left-handers in all sorts of trouble.

  6. Aus 201-5published at 58.2 overs

Joe Root's head rocks back at slip as Woakes beats Head with a beauty. A good start from the Wizard.

  8. Aus 201-5published at 58 overs

Joe Root is having a chat with Chris Woakes at the end of the over. I reckon Mark Wood's spell is done. Can Woakes keep the pressure on?

Ollie Robinson is causing all sorts of trouble for Australia at the moment and this isn't even a new-ish ball.

  10. Aus 200-5published at 57.5 overs

Proper theatre, this, in the Gabba furness. England players and fans applaud as Robinson thunders in, finding the edge seemingly at will.

It would have gone straight to gully. He would have swallowed it.

You can see the frustration on Ollie Robinson's face. He has bowled really well today. He is a class act.

Edged...! Wide of all five slips awaiting a catch.

Ollie Robinson is having a stormer.

  13. Aus 196-5published at 05:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

England fans will know Alex Carey from his white-ball exploits. He was particularly good in the 2019 World Cup if I remember rightly. The left-hander averages 34.73 in first-class cricket with five hundreds.

Wood keeps him tied down on nought.

Mark Wood has been very, very impressive you have to say.

  15. Aus 196-5published at 56.4 overs

Blimey. Mark Wood nearly takes Alex Carey's head off with a bouncer.

England have stuck to their task and Australia haven't got out away. With a couple of wickets all of a sudden they are not quite out of sight.

England have just managed to wrestle themselves back into it. The next 10 overs are crucial and if they can get another couple of wickets they are right back in the game.

  17. Aus 196-5published at 56.2 overs

Mark Wood is on his hands and knees after hurling the ball down at 90mph. A couple more wickets here...

England will want to bowl Australia out for less or around 250. They'll then have to bat better than they did in the first innings - it is as simple as that.

  19. Aus 196-5published at 56 overs

    Lead by 49

Ollie Robinson allows himself to smile at the end of the over before sticking his blue England cap back on his head. He has bowled so well all day and deserves those wickets.

Travis Head has faced six balls and Alex Carey two. England are in this.

Those two balls have just kept England in the Test match. My word. My word.
