  1. Aus 184-2published at 50.3 overs

    HIT EM!

Steve Smith looks to steal a single but it straight to Dawid Malan at square leg.

Smith has to evade Mark Wood, who is just stood there in his follow through, and that sends him slightly off course.

Malan is off balance, on the floor, but his throw is wild and absolutely nowhere near the stumps. Smith would have been a good three or four yards out at the non-striker's end.

    Another opportunity missed for England.

  2. Not outpublished at 50.2 overs

    Aus 183-2

As we initially thought, impact was outside the line of off stump.

We'll never know about the height.

Height looked good for England. The question will be if Smith got outside off stump.

Hmmmm. It does actually look a tad high maybe. It hits him on the flap of the pad.

    It is a fair delivery.

    Is Smith in line?

  7. England reviewpublished at 04:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Big, big appeal from England for lbw against Steve Smith.

Is he outside the line? He does get a long way across. The height looked good.

Extravagant from Smith. That was an un-Smith-like shot. It could have gone anywhere.

I am not sure why Leach is trying to tie Warner down by bowling a leg-stump line. Warner is dealing with it pretty comfortably.

  10. Aus 183-2published at 50 overs

Absolute disdain. It is the only way to describe it. David Warner slog sweeps Jack Leach again and that flies to the boundary.

Australia are definitely targeting Leach. Steve Smith tries to go into out over the off side but miscues and it runs through point for three. Smith always looks fidgety at the start, but particularly so today.

Dan: Give Rory Burns the ball, he owes us something.

  12. Aus 175-2published at 49 overs

David Warner picks up another boundary with a steered cut, before working off his hips for a single. He's up to 84.

That brings us the Mark Wood v Steve Smith battle. Can it provide us the drama that Smith v Jofra Archer did in 2019?

England start with a five-four on-side field for Smith. There was a short leg, a leg gully, a square leg just behind square, a mid-on and fine leg. England think he's susceptible to flicking one up early on in his innings.

Mark Wood has replaced Chris Woakes by the way.

He'll be bowling to David Warner, rather than the new man Steve Smith though.

Hopefully with a fresh man at the crease, Jack Leach can find a rhythm without a settled batter trying to hit him out of the attack.

  16. Aus 170-2published at 48 overs

    Catch it! Oh!

Steve Smith looks to be proactive against Jack Leach straight away. He takes a step down the track and hacks a shot through mid-wicket and away to the boundary.

A streaky start from Australia's premier batter.

England really need to get a squeeze on and take two or three wickets in quick succession.

  18. How to stop Smith?published at 04:08 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

England need to keep the ball away from Steve Smith's chest area. As this graphic shows, he scores runs for fun when it gets high on him. Instead, England need to hang it outside off stump.

  19. Postpublished at 04:07 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Steve Smith is the new man.

He averages 65.11 against England and 67.72 in Australia.

    Get comfortable.
