There might be a little bit more agony for England before they go out and have to fend off the big Australia quicks.

Joe Root is rearranging his field. He doesn't look too down. I've certainly seen him look glummer.

Jack Leach's performance - accompanied by Australia's plans to him, the big missed chances, Ben Stokes' injury and the effort with the bat have really hampered him.

Five minutes remain in the day. This could be the final over.

It has been a lack of effort from the England side. It has been a whole-hearted performance.

Ollie Robinson bowled manfully and magnificently. Chris Woakes has been alright, slightly off par. Mark Wood has absolutely flown at his task. It is just Jack Leach - they have targeted him.

It has turned into another horror day for England and they even got Steve Smith out cheaply...

Australia are enjoying themselves here and they have a licence to play.

Mark Wood and Travis Head share another fist bump. They're still friends.

Wood has bowled so well all day, like the other seamers he has given everything, but like the rest he's struggling late in the day and Starc slaps him for four.

Travis Head's century had two sixes and 12 fours and came from 85 balls. He had six from 18 balls and then 95 from 76 balls.

It is the fastest Test century at The Gabba and the joint-third fastest in Ashes cricket.

Head is going to continue. Wood looked a little shook up himself there.

Thankfully no-one is too badly hurt.

Wow! That is a quick hands to head beamer that hit straight on the chin. Luckily he bounced straight back up because that was toe curling.

Thankfully it hitting his hand first would have taken a bit of heat off it.

Wood is straight down to see if Head is OK. Head gets up and gives his a pat on the back. That could have been so, so nasty.

Fortunately the ball has deflected onto Head's chin via his glove. That has taken a bit of pace off the ball.

Oh, what a horrible moment. It really took him by surprise.

    What a moment that is.

Aus 332-7published at 07:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    OH NO!

Mark Wood's first ball with the new ball is a rapid beamer that hits Travis Head on the chin.

That's horrible. Head is down on the ground.

England had a sniff when Ollie Robinson took two wickets in two balls earlier in this session. Australia were 195-5. How things have changed.

There are 18 minutes left in the day. It has turned into a second miserable one for England in this match.

Well played, Travis Head. He felt the room and the feeling of England that they had a glimmer of hope. He weathered the pressure and then felt the bowling attack was on their last legs and he has counter-attacked beautifully.

There it is! A wonderful hundred. He's getting a huge hug from Mitchell Starc - it was a lovely warm one. He bellows with delight.

He, in all probability, has taken this game away from England.

The Gabba erupts! Travis Head drives his 85th ball for four to bring up the third fastest century in Ashes history.

Of comes the helmet. Up go his arms. He then lets out an almighty roar as the dressing room stands to applaud.

I must admit the planning and this Test match seems to have gone out of the window. They had four years to sort this out and there has just been a litany of mistakes.

  19. Aus 320-7published at 80 overs

Of course Australia were on top when Travis Head came in at 189-3 but their position was not totally secure. It is now. Can the left-hander get his hundred?

The new ball has been taken. Head is on 97 from 83 balls.

England have been careful to manage the workload of James Anderson and possibly Stuart Broad.

They are playing Ben Stokes for his talismanic qualities but also because he balances the side.

Is it sensible to be bowling him, when he's clearly in some discomfort, with two balls before the new ball? Where does the planning for the next four Tests come in?
