  1. 50 runs

50 for Headpublished at 70.1 overs

Full from Wood... driven for four by Travis Head.

That's his fifty and he gets a pat on the back from Pat. The dressing room is standing to applaud too.

    These are crucial runs.

If England are to win here they are going to have to do something they've only done twice before in Australia - win after conceding a first-innings deficit of 100.

  3. Aus 257-6published at 06:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    Lead by 110

As his figures show, Australia have attacked Leach all day. Pat Cummins is new to the crease but he continues that plan by running down and taking three over the in-field. Travis Head chops a boundary fine a couple of balls later.

Australia's lead was 48 when Ollie Robinson took his two in two balls.

Jack Leach is back. It looks like damage limitation until the new ball.

    That is a magnificent blow.

  6. Aus 247-6published at 69 overs

    Head 40, Cummins 0

Travis Head goes full Brian Lara with a swaggering, flashing slash of a drive off Wood through cover. He is showing what can be done by the lower order if the top three do the dirty work.

    Australia's lead goes beyond 100.

The over-rate has been slow today but it has been a fascinating day. Australia did so much damage yesterday. England have bowled well at times, they really have, but Australia are well ahead.

  9. Aus 243-6published at 68 overs

    Lead by 96

Root is trying to hurry through his overs and get to the new ball. But, as Stuart Clark has been saying, they can't afford to give away runs as they try to get there.

England have got to find a way to prise out these four wickets as soon as possible. There is no point waiting until the new ball in 13 overs.

They would add 25-30 runs in that time as a minimum and they would have a lead of around 125 on a wicket that is still offering assistance. I don't think it will ever be a batting-friendly wicket.

  12. drinks break

Drinks break - Aus 240-6published at 06:05 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

The players are taking a drink. England's bowlers have done pretty well but, for anyone just waking up, I'm afraid it could and should have been so much better.

David Warner was given three lives en route to his 94.

  13. Aus 240-6published at 67 overs

    Lead by 93

Mark Wood, surely feeling weary by now, returns for another burst. Joe Root knows he needs to take these last four wickets quickly to have any chance.

It's accurate from Wood, as it has been all day, and a bouncer catches Travis Head flush on the forearm.

If Australia get another 50 or 60 then the game is pretty much done and dusted.

  15. What you have missedpublished at 05:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

England's bowlers - despite not always being assisted by their mates in the field - are doing their best to drag the tourists back into the game.

Ollie Robinson dismissed Marcus Harris for just three early on in the day before David Warner and Marcus Labuschagne shared 156 for the second wicket.

Warner, who eventually fell for 94, was bowled from a Ben Stokes no-ball on 17 before being dropped on 48 by Rory Burns and surviving a run-out opportunity from Haseeb Hameed at short leg.

Australia have attacked England's spinner Jack Leach - hitting him for five sixes - but he had Marcus Labuschagne caught at point for 74.

Mark Wood then had Steve Smith caught behind for 12, before Ollie Robinson got Warner and Cameron Green in successive balls after tea.

Chris Woakes has just dismissed debutant Alex Carey but Australia's lead is nearing three figures...

  16. Aus 239-6published at 05:59 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    Head 32, Cummins 0

Stuart Clark is a harsh man. I think the seamers have been pretty good. Root is very wide in this over, mind.

England's bowling has been ok, it hasn't been horrible, but they've just lacked that precision that Australia's bowlers showed yesterday.

They've just been slightly short or slightly full. The heat map is just slightly bigger than it needs to be - six inches either way - rather than being bang on.

  18. Aus 236-6published at 65 overs

    Lead by 89

There are lovely cheers for Australia's captain Pat Cummins as he emerges. He successfully defends his first two balls.

It was a good catch in the end because it was well above his head.

Alex Carey will be disappointed with that - it was an innocuous delivery.

He didn't get the ball plumb in the middle of his bat and that is a very useful wicket for England.
