  2. Aus 289-6published at 74.3 overs

This was only 90 minutes ago when Australia led by 48. How things have changed.

This is classic Ben Stokes - he is doing this for the team. He is lifting his leg as he turns back to bowl as if it is hurting him.

  4. Postpublished at 06:41 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Ben Stokes has taken off his cap. He's clearly hampered by a leg injury but is going to do a job for his team.

The new ball is six overs away but I think the remaining quick bowlers will be hiding in the shadows on the outfield and hoping they are not spotted.

England are staggering around the ring without the energy to fight back.

A single is a jab to the body but another six from Head is the equivalent of a damaging, crushing strike to the chin.

Oh and now we have four overthrows. The knockout blow?

They give you pickle juice now to help cramp. The idea is that it shocks the body into not being cramped anymore because they think the juice is so disgusting.

It is disgusting... I've had it once and I was almost sick all over the changing room.

Leach is going to continue from the other end. His 10 overs have cost 80.

Robinson has just giving the substitute signal to the bench there. I think he'll go off the field and try get a banana or anything.

  10. Aus 274-6published at 06:35 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    Lead by 127

Robinson is twirling his hands to say he wants a sub but is at least able to finish the over.

Joe Root has nowhere to go here. Ben Stokes is injured, Jack Leach is getting smashed all over and Wood, Robinson and Woakes are knackered.

Ollie Robinson is in trouble here, but there's that all too familiar niggle now. It's a horrible feeling.

  12. Aus 272-6published at 72.3 overs

Robinson is taking an age to get back to his mark. That won't help the dire over-rate. He's held his upper leg once or twice here too. He can't be injured too, can he?

Joe Root has no choice but to dip into the well once again.

The three lead seamers have given it absolutely everything today.

  14. Aus 272-6published at 72.2 overs

The game is slipping away and Joe Root decides he has no choice but to ask Ollie Robinson for one more spell.

    Robinson looks stiff. Very stiff.

  15. What you have missedpublished at 06:30 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

Morning! England's bowlers are doing their best to drag their side back into this game but Australia's lead is now above 100 and growing fairly quickly with the tourists trying to get through overs to get to the second new ball.

Ollie Robinson dismissed Marcus Harris for just three early in the day before David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne shared 156 for the second wicket.

Warner, who made 94, lived a charmed life, being bowled from a Ben Stokes no-ball on 17 before being dropped on 48 by Rory Burns and surviving a run-out opportunity from Haseeb Hameed at short leg.

Mark Wood had Steve Smith caught behind for 12, before Ollie Robinson got Warner and Cameron Green in successive balls after tea. At that point England sensed something.

But Travis Head is leading an Australia attack and just reached his half-century from just 51 balls.

The second new ball is under 10 overs away, but England need to strike before then with Australia's lead growing all the time.

This is poor bowling, it really is.

  17. Aus 272-6published at 72 overs

    Lead by 125

A horror ball from Leach is smashed down to fine leg by Travis Head. Haseeb Hameed should stop it down in the shadows but he makes a right mess of it. The crowd absolutely love it and they cheer again and the next ball - another long-hop - is punished too.

  18. Postpublished at 06:27 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    Ian Chappell
Former Australia captain on Test Match Special

Jack Leach hasn't done the job that Joe Root would have expected of him. He'd have wanted him to contain Australia.

  19. Eng 262-6published at 71 overs

    Lead by 115

Wood is giving everything but the ball doesn't quite have the same fizz. An edge from Pat Cummins goes straight down into the ground.

Shadows lengthening in Brisbane, the crowd is growing more festive, the Wave has started going around, and Travis Head is providing brisk entertainment. That is his skill: getting things moving. With the lead over 100, there is plenty of good cheer.
