    Carey c Pope b Woakes 12 (Aus 236-6)

Gone! What a bonus. Debutant Alex Carey has pulled a very average ball from Chris Woakes straight to Ollie Pope at mid-wicket.

That could prove crucial because Carey could have taken the game away from England late in the day.

That is a very confident strike. Australia have a plan to take it to the spinners when they come on and keep the fast bowlers bowling.

    Aus 236-5published at 64 overs

    Head 29, Carey 12

Australia definitely have a plan to attack England's spinners, whether its Joe Root or Jack Leach. After having a look for a few balls Travis Head pumps Root back over his head. Locals are scattered as the ball thuds into the multi-coloured seats.

I suspect Joe Root is trying to speed up the over rate too here.

Joe Root is indeed on for his first bowl of the match.

This is the first full day England have had in the field on the tour. They've been preparing by going on walks round Brisbane. They will be feeling it.

  7. Aus 229-5published at 63 overs

    Lead by 82

I think I have just spotted Joe Root warming up at slip. If Stokes is struggling that might not be the worst idea with two left-handers in.

Robinson has provided hope but this session could be a tough one as the bowlers tire.

Ollie Robinson has given England a glimmer in this evening session...

A couple of freebies from Ben Stokes. He was just too short. He's better off airing too full and if Travis Head can drive him then so be it.

    These are important runs.

Stokes looks to be down on pace and oomph, seemingly because of this niggle. Head is able to leap onto another ball that's too short and this time cut for four.

The last ball of the over is clipped to the rope too.

That was not what England were after.

Travis Head was on that very quickly. It was a little bit short.

  13. Aus 216-5published at 61.3 overs

Stokes is flexing his left knee before bowling. I'm still not particularly confident this will go as planned.

If you're just joining us, Stokes pulled up in the field when chasing a ball towards the boundary.

Head pulls a short-ish ball for four.

This is a very heartening sign for an England fan.

  15. Aus 212-5published at 05:37 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2021

    Head 10, Carey 7

Another maiden from Woakes. They're becoming so common it's not worth mentioning.

Ben Stokes has removed his cap. This is a big boost for England.

You've got to give credit to Ollie Robinson. He found a really nice length there.

There's been a lot of excitement in the last half an hour or so.

It has been excellent bowling from Ollie Robinson but maybe it is time for him to come off.

The bowlers are definitely tiring a little bit. It is a tough final session.

  18. Aus 212-5published at 60.3 overs

That may be Robinson's last over. Will Ben Stokes bowl next? We still haven't seen him do so since he pulled up in the field.

    Phil Tufnell

Was that a tired delivery? Or was Robinson searching?

It felt a bit floaty. But the fella has bowled out of his big bowling boots today but perhaps it was just searching a bit. He has bowled fantastic and got England back in it.

  20. Aus 212-5published at 60 overs

Alex Carey's first runs in Test cricket come courtesy of a perfect straight drive. If his first boundary is anything to go by he'll have a great career.

Robinson's over ends with an all-run four. How exciting.
