Root wants to be a little proactive to Lyon here. He doesn't want to let him settle. The sweep shot puts a spinner off their line and length.

Australia will know if they can get past Root they might slide through the rest of the innings.

How is that? Nathan Lyon appeals for lbw against Joe Root, as the England captain looks to sweep again, but there is very little going for it.
It hit Root a mile outside off stump for one.
Root is looking to be busy and proactive though - he takes three from the over, including a lovely flick between mid-wicket and mid-on for a couple.

Matthew Williams: England will lose this game there's no doubt about it, but if they can keep the Australian quicks in the field for a day or two it will build some confidence and tire them out. As it stands they've only had a decent warm-up.

Good from Josh Hazlewood. He changes up his angle and goes round the wicket, and that tempts Dawid Malan into a prod forward.
A little bit of seam movement takes it past the edge, fortunately for England and Malan.
It is really clever bowling from Hazlewood though, because he'd put an extra man out too. The ol' double bluff.

The surface has changed colour from the emerald green carpet we saw on day one. There's something there for Lyon.

Oh! Joe Root looks to paddle away, but the ball loops up and just over the head of Marnus Labuschagne at short leg.
That excited Nathan Lyon and the Australian crowd, but I don't think there was any bat involved.
Not sure it is the wisest shot from Root, though. With a short leg and leg slip in there isn't much reward for a paddle.
Hmmmm. Another change for Australia. Pat Cummins decides a two-over spell is enough for now and Nathan Lyon and his off spin comes back on.

Charlie: Blame me for what will inevitably happen after this tweet but all I want is a few of the players to get in and have a good bat. We've already lost, we aren't gonna save it but we can bat ourselves into a bit of form, in that sense the pressure is off, just enjoy it.

More good fielding.
Dawid Malan plays a lovely flick through mid-wicket but Pat Cummins does superbly to get across and keep it down to a single.
Malan is up to 21.

Australia are sensing blood on a surface that is offering them a little more uneven bounce than it did for the England seamers.

Australia should comfortably win this game, but they know there is a chance to inflict some serious psychological damage on England.
Mitchell Starc does superbly at mid-on to keep Joe Root on strike with a full-stretch dive.
They don't want the England skipper to score easy runs. He is going to have to earn every single one.
Here's how Haseeb Hameed fell to Mitchell Starc.
Look at the disappointment on his face.
He has looked really good in both innings, but has fallen in the 20s both times.
We're back after drinks.
Pat Cummins to Dawid Malan.
There are around 50 minutes until tea. England need Malan and Joe Root to still be there.

Yeeesh! Edged but through the gap!
One gets a little bit big on Dawid Malan and he gets a thick edge on it, but it goes in the gap between third slip and Cameron Green at gully and goes away for a well-run three.
It is all going on at the moment.
It is time for a drink.
Dawid Malan survives. There is no evidence, from the replays and from hotspot, that the left-hander got any bat on it.
Remember we have no RTS/Snicko/UltraEdge in this Test due to a technical issue.

If you give that out, you're cheating.

It wasn't a great shot, playing away from his body. The cordon is convinced.
Has Dawid Malan nicked behind as he looks to guide away?
The Australian slip cordon were convinced and came running in celebrating, but Malan is laughing with Joe Root.
