Hameed played very well. He looks to have all the right attributes for an opening batsman. He just needs a score to get him going.

It was just the day that England and the tour needed. It was all doom and gloom after the first two days.

At the toss Joe Root said this side had character and they do. The character he and Dawid Malan showed with the bat was fantastic and momentum is just starting to swing towards us.

From a very desperate position, one where defeat looked certain, they've given themselves a chance.

The one big difference between this game and the famous 2010-11 match is that a draw is not an option.

It was so important England didn't roll over in this second innings. That they came in and showed they had a method and plan to this Australian bowling attack.

I don't know why he was lured into playing that. He's left so well but almost gave an edge off the last ball.

My heart. Root nibbles at the last ball. The crowd thought there was an edge.

    They've got there. Just.

What a fine performance this has been. A really good effort. Determined, gritted teeth stuff.

Cameron Green will bowl the final over of the day.

If you're just waking up England really are 220-2. Can they finish it off?

Urghhhhh. Malan goes back to cut - always dangerous. It misses off stump by just a couple of inches.

Lyon is done for the day.

That was beautifully placed - a fine shot. Malan has driven well today.

Four to Dawid Malan! I'm not sure I want to see him driving Nathan Lyon at this stage of the day but it's a lovely shot.

Root looks tired. He's breathing heavily. A massive amount of concentration has gone into his innings.
