Win Viz had England's chances at 1% at one stage but that has crept up to 8% now. Somehow it feels closer than that but that's just because England fans could be forgiven for thinking the tourists would collapse in a heap.

    Another over done.

Another loose shot from Malan. He didn't move his feet at all. He can only get himself out with that. Keep concentrating.

Dawid Malan is tiring. He's playing a few loose shots. Joe Root needs to have a word.

    Malan 74, Root 85

Starc is still hurling it down at speeds in excess of 90mph and the scoring has slowed at the end of the day which will probably rule out a chance of Root reaching his hundred. That doesn't really matter. It's all about surviving these 10 minutes. If he and Malan manage to do so it would complete an excellent and somewhat unexpected day for the tourists.

Totum: Genuinely thought I would wake up to highlights of a finished Test match. So this score, relative to what I expected, is glorious Hope exists again, but it is the hope that kills you.

15 minutes to go in the day. If you're an England fan you can tick each of them off.

Mitchell Starc has poured some refreshing cold water onto the back of his neck and is going to run in again.

When Hameed was dismissed there was a feeling of inevitability. But Malan and Root have given some encouragement to the dressing room and England fans at home. A long way to go but the miracle is possible.

The TV cameras are zooming in on Jack Leach. He has his pads on ready to be nightwatchman but how England will hope he is not needed.

A single from Root brings up the 150 partnership. The England skipper punches gloves with Dawid Malan. "Keep going" he mutters, I hope.

England have only had one partnership higher than this in their last two Ashes tours combined.

It was the 237 that Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow put on in the first innings in Perth four years ago. England went on to lose that game.

Root and Malan are both down receiving treatment from the physio. Malan's issue is just cramp, I think. Root has been hit in an awkward place just above his knee.

There are 20 minutes left before they can both have a long bath.

JF Parish: Well, I've just got up and checked the score. I'm usually bad luck because after I've checked the wickets tend to start tumbling.

Tim: Dreamt that England had been bowled out and had lost by an innings & 372 runs, so waking up to see them 200/2 was a pleasant surprise!

The evening sun is beating down at the Gabba as the England fans continue to sing their songs. Mitchell Starc goes up for an appeal for lbw against Root but there's nothing doing there. Root hit it for starters.

Joe Root is into the eighties ladies and gents. Nobody move. If you've got to be late for work so be it. England fans wanted fight and Root and Malan are providing it.

  19. What you have missedpublished at 07:00 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2021

Morning! Wake up and turn on the radio and stay glued to your phone. England are making a fist of things in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.

Captain Joe Root and Dawid Malan are leading the comeback. They have batted for over three hours together and are nearing a stand of 150.

Both are currently in the 70s and have both practically offered chanceless innings so far.

England's deficit - which was 278 - is now down at 74 too.

Earlier, England bowled Australia - who added 82 runs in 20.3 overs today - out for 425 this morning. Travis Head was the last man out for 152, while Mark Wood finished with 3-85 and Ollie Robinson 3-58.

They got through a tricky eight-over period to face before lunch before slipping to 61-2. Rory Burns, who was on a king pair, was given out third ball but successfully reviewed the lbw decision, before he gloved a rising Pat Cummins delivery through to Alex Carey to fall for 13.

Haseeb Hameed played nicely in making 25, before he gloved a leg-side delivery from Mitchell Starc behind.

Play will continue until 07:30 GMT.
