The Aussies are trying to clap and keep morale high but, like England yesterday, there must be tired bodies out there.

It's the England fans I have hear singing.

Can Root and Malan get through these final 30 minutes? It would be such a huge boost.

We greet you this morning with good news and bearing gifts.

England have mounted a response to the Australia onslaught from the last couple of days. We're seeing the fight that we've wanted to see.

    Malan 72, Root 78

England started this innings 278 runs behind Australia. The deficit is now only 75. How good have Root and Malan been? There hasn't really been a chance.

It'll just be starting to niggle away at Australia I'd have thought.

  6. Eng 203-2published at 61.1 overs

More good news to boost the early risers... Joe Root reverse-sweeps Nathan Lyon brilliantly for four.

    200 up! Only two down...

You start to wonder when Australia will start to think about India chasing 329, external to win at The Gabba last year.

Hands up who thought England could get near 200 having lost just two wickets. Be honest.

I've liked Dawid Malan all the way. I enjoyed watching him last time he came to Australia and I thought he was a bit unlucky to be dropped.

It is that width again and Dawid Malan ceased on it. It was nicely put away - it was in the air but he hit it hard.

That is the left-handers food and drink.

Rubbish to start from Starc. Malan chops away his ninth four and it takes him into the seventies!

Mitchell Starc is back into the attack. The day started with him at the crease when Australia added 82 runs before being bowled out.

    Starc made a useful 35.

  14. Eng 190-2published at 60 overs

    Malan 67, Root 70

The Australians in the crowd are in a sleepy period as England continue to slow the hosts charge towards victory. Nathan Lyon has bowled some good balls today but a few poor ones too. This one is way down the leg side and Root helps himself to four.

England have created some frustration for the Australia bowlers. You can see Cummins is starting to get frustrated and that's a good thing for England now he's captain too.

  16. Eng 185-2published at 59 overs

It is more than three hours since the last wicket. This partnership is worth 124.

Joe Root has never scored a century in Australia but he did have a pretty good series four years ago. He made five half-centuries in nine innings last time and averaged 47.
