Looking at the replays of that Malan shot, Harris actually made a meal of the attempt. He probably could have got there.
Malan 66, Root 65
Root and Malan have batted well - really well - but it is not plain sailing. Root is floored here by one from Cummins that spits at him, the ball hitting room on the glove before he crumples. Malan ends the over by mistiming a pull which lands just in front of a scrambling fielder.
Morning! Where have you been? While you've been sleeping England have been making a fist of things in the first Ashes Test in Brisbane.
They bowled Australia - who added 82 runs in 20.3 overs today - out for 425 this morning. That meant they faced a first-innings deficit of 278. Travis Head was the last man out for 152.
Mark Wood picked up two wickets today to finish with 3-85, while Ollie Robinson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-58.
England got through a tricky eight-over period to face before lunch before slipping to 61-2. Rory Burns, who was on a king pair, was given out third ball but successfully reviewed the lbw decision, before he gloved a rising Pat Cummins delivery through to Alex Carey to fall for 13.
Haseeb Hameed played nicely in making 25, before he gloved a leg-side delivery from Mitchell Starc behind.
Since then Joe Root and Dawid Malan have batted beautifully and have both made half-centuries in a stand worth more than 120. England's deficit is now less than 100...

Ooooft. Careful there, Dawid. Malan is cutting one that was probably too close off Lyon.

England need to put the deficit out of their mind and just keep batting. If they are still only two down tonight and around the mark to be level with Australia they can start to think about what they want to set Australia.
It looks like the sort of pitch that we saw last season where India had to score 330 to win the game and they managed that. It was a pretty decent fourth-innings wicket.
England have a hell of a long way ahead of them. They can't get too far ahead of themselves and they've just got to keep batting.
Yes you're reading this right. The Test is still going. England have two batters in the sixties. They've only lost two wickets.
Dawid Malan has played some lovely stuff.

It will be on Joe Root's mind that he has never made a century in Australia but he needs to try and forget about that if he can.
He just needs to keep batting well and the way he has been this year.

England needed this and the series did too. The tourists will still have to do something incredible to avoid defeat but they are showing they can put up a fight with the bat.
That's drinks. Another target reached.

There are too many singles on offer to Marnus Labuschagne.
Malan 64, Root 58
21 overs remain in the day. If England keep going at the same rate they'll be trailing by about 40 runs at the close. It's a big if. Let's not get ahead of ourselves.

That is a sumptuous shot! What a fabulous shot it was.
Cummins took the first wicket in this England innings - that of Rory Burns for 13 in the ninth over.
Things have flattened out since then. Dawid Malan hits one of the best shots of the day to drive the Australian captain through the covers.
Pat Cummins is back. Danger.
Here's a clip to warm the hearts of England fans on a cold Friday morning...

This is England's first century stand for the third wicket in Brisbane since Thorpe and Hick in 1994-95.

Two appeals for lbw come in Labuschagne's over. He wanted a review after the first was turned down but didn't get a lot of support. Replays actually show it was closer than it looked. It was clipping the stumps.

The next challenge for these two batters is to get the deficit down to double figures and then all of a sudden the likes of Pat Cummins and the others will have to come back.
Things will start to get a little bit tense in the fielding side and they'll be thinking "oh no, we were in such a good position and we're in danger of throwing this away" and the balance shifts a little bit.
This is why I love Test cricket - this is what it is about.

It's amazing what a partnership can do. England are effectively -119 for 2 but England fans will be getting out of bed with a spring in their step.

This is the first little tick for the England batting line-up that Australia have had to go to Marnus Labuschagne. It is something in the store.
It is the first time that Pat Cummins has had to think about anything while he's been Test captain.
Morning! While England's backs are against the wall they are making a fight of this first Ashes Test in Brisbane.
Having resumed on 343-7, Australia added another 82 in 20.3 overs before eventually being bowled out for 425 - a first-innings lead of 278. Travis Head was the last man out for 152.
Mark Wood picked up two wickets today to finish with 3-85, while Ollie Robinson was the pick of the bowlers with 3-58.
England had a tricky eight-over period to face before lunch and reached 13-0. Rory Burns, who was on a king pair, was given out third ball but successfully reviewed the lbw decision. He fell for 13 after the break, gloving a rising Pat Cummins delivery through to Alex Carey.
Haseeb Hameed played nicely, and was just starting to find the boundary with fluency, before he gloved a leg-side delivery from Mitchell Starc behind to fall for 25. That left England 61-2.
Since then Joe Root and Dawid Malan have batted beautifully and have both reached their half-centuries in the last 15 minutes or so. A century stand is approaching, but England's deficit is still around 120...
