    Malan 45, Root 46

Dawid Malan now times one nicely off Nathan Lyon. I know conditions are easier but this just shows what was possible in the first innings had the batters got in.

Lyon, hands on knees, stares at the end of another wicketless over.

That is beautifully played by Joe Root. He really timed the pants off that.

    Malan 41, Root 45

Another lovely stroke from Joe Root. He has driven down the ground well today. Win or lose, England will be delighted to leave Brisbane with their captain in some sort of form.

He almost messes up a ball later attempting an upper cut. There's no nick and Alex Carey didn't take the catch anyway.

The stewards don't take any prisoners. They see it as an opportunity. BANG - they take him down!

He lost a shoe halfway through that and was wearing just one for the second half of his foray.

We've got another pitch invader. Where is Sam Kerr when you need her?

Nathan Lyon is getting some lovely shape on the ball but not every ball is doing it which makes it difficult for the batters.

Lyon is bowling OK, but Joe Root hasn't let him settle.

There is something there for Nathan Lyon now bowling round the wicket to the left-handers.

That DRS situation is remarkable. This is international sport.

Nathan Lyon bowls a beauty at the end of the over. Not much Dawid Malan could do there except hope he doesn't feel an edge.

We don't have all of DRS available, remember, and that's because the maintenance man who can come and fix it isn't allowed into Queensland because of Covid regulations!

  13. Eng 126-2published at 41.2 overs

Four more to Joe Root, this time on the sweep. Don't get excited. It's not worth it.

England are creeping along. They are asserting themselves on the situation themselves much better than they did on the opening day.

The attitude England are showing is a good blueprint for the rest of the series.

    I have a question...

Where do the Barmy Army get all of their trumpeters from? They have an endless supply.

Those England fans are cheering as Malan slices a drive to the boundary to end Starc's latest over.

It's amazing how the tide feels like it's changing. The energy from Australia and the crowd is a little lower than it has been.

  19. Eng 117-2published at 40 overs

    Malan 37, Root 34

The crowd go up in celebration as Nathan Lyon takes a catch in his follow-through. The problem with that appeal was Malan was nowhere near hitting the ball.

When Lyon does get this 400th wicket there'll be quite the party.

Lovely shot - that was four from the moment it left the middle of the bat.
