I wonder if Joe Root knows he's broken that record. I doubt it.

He celebrates by creaming a drive off Starc. The ball whistles to the boundary while Hot Spot shows how it really was middled.

Nathan Lyon is trying a lot of different things to try and get that 400th wicket - things like arm balls, bowling it a little quicker etc.

That is quite the development. I have less sympathy for batters if they're going out to bat protected like a member of the SAS.

Nathan Lyon continues his long quest to reach 400 Test wickets. Malan defends solidly.

We used to use football shin pads as arm guards when playing on pitches like this. I suspect modern-day arm guards are much better.

Well thank you for joining us Simon.

I had a difficult moment before tea when the sound of a Nathan Lyon appeal woke my girlfriend up. I'll hear about that later.

No such danger in the first over after the break. Root sees off six Mitchell Starc deliveries.

Haseeb Hameed has got himself in twice in this match. He'll be a little annoyed with himself but has shown promise.

Adam Davies: England just need to prove to themselves they can score 400. If we can somehow do that then we have fought our way back into the series!

Rory Burns has not enjoyed his time in Brisbane.

He has almost out for a pair, managed to scrap to lunch but then was out in the first over after the interval.

He got a very good ball...

What is everyone else doing while following this? We'll soon be joined by the early risers. I bet we have a lot of people with young babies following.

Here's Matt Henry to take you through the remainder of the day.

Let's hope it is the remainder of the day and not the remainder of the game.

Dawid Malan has played and missed a fair few times and left one that went literally millimetres over his off stump, but he has played some lovely shots.

    These two fours were beautiful.

England have finally got themselves a foothold in the Test which is good to see. They have just got a bit of a partnership going. England are finally trying to trade a few blows with the bowling attack.
