England lost Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed in that session, but they have added 84 runs in the 28 overs that we had.

There are a minimum of 39 overs left in the day - but we'll do well to get all of them in in the two and a half hours of play we'll see from 05:00 GMT.

England will want to take out a significant chunk of Australia's lead as the bowlers tire in the evening session.

    Time for a break.

A little bit of spin for Nathan Lyon in that over, and he got one to skid on and beat the edge of Dawid Malan's bat, but the England left-hander survives. Lyon's wait for a 400th Test wicket continues.

England are 107-2 at tea, a deficit of 171. Malan is unbeaten on 35 with captain Joe Root on 26.

The run map shows Dawid Malan scored 35 with 4 fours, 1 three, 3 twos, and 10 singles for England

The signs are good for Joe Root. Just tick off the next box, get to tea, and then bat to the close.

A half-hearted appeal from Pat Cummins as he hits Joe Root on the pads, but it was too high. Getting an lbw is hard work at The Gabba.

A leg bye and three singles from the over.

We've got time for one more over before tea - it will probably be the last.

England are making a much better fist of it but they are still a long way behind.

These are good batting conditions now.

Joe Root sweeps for a single, as he continues trying to be busy.

It looks hard toil for Australia at the moment. The sun is beating down in Brisbane.

    Four more.

Nathan Lyon drops a fraction short and Joe Root goes deep in his crease and slaps a pull through mid-wicket.

Dawid Malan picks up a couple more through mid-wicket.

He and Joe Root have put on 37 in exactly 12 overs now.

There are 10 minutes until tea. They'll want to get there and keep going on long after the interval.

Beautiful. Root just waited for it. England will like to see that.

Shot of the England innings so far.

Joe Root looks perfectly balanced and he drives Pat Cummins straight back down the ground for a gorgeous four.

This is not the calamity of day one. England are digging in. The pitch has eased a bit but there is still something in it for the bowlers.

Shot! Dawid Malan has played the cut shot beautifully in this innings, and he picks up another four by rocking back and finding the gap behind point.

Oh! That is an even better shot. Malan comes down the pitch and plays a quite simply gorgeous drive to the cover fence.

    Malan is on 31.

Joe Root picks up another boundary with a steer - we'll give him the benefit of the doubt - through the gap in the slip cordon.

Eeek. That is a less than convincing shot though. Root looks to drive away, but a big leading edge goes out to fine leg.

The England skipper is up to 14.

Mark Puttick: Joe Root needs to make 72 to get his Test average back to 50 after it dipped to 49 following his first-innings duck. Or 22* in the event of an England collapse.

Dawid Malan and Joe Root exchange singles, before there is a little bit of confusion and a potential run out but Root is comfortably home at the non-striker's end.

The ball hits Nathan Lyon on the wrist as he looks to gather the ball. He looks in some pain, but he'll be alright. Doesn't have the best record when it comes to gathering the ball for a run out does he...

They are battling hard if that makes you feel any better?

This has been a much better effort than the first innings so far.

It makes me nervous every time I see someone dive knee first at the Gabba.

A sign of Joe Root in great form is when he doesn't fall over those balls.

    Lovely from Joe Root.

He picks up his first boundary with a beautiful well-balanced flick through mid-wicket.

He just lets the ball come to him there. That is so important.
