    Good morning.

Their fingertips are sore but England are hanging in there - just. Australia were 221-2 at the start of the day and they're now 302-5.

Marnus Labuschagne turned his overnight 95 into his first Ashes hundred but, having been caught behind off an Ollie Robinson no-ball on 102, was eventually out lbw to Robinson for 103.

Joe Root bowled Travis Head for 18 and Ben Stokes cleaned up Cameron Green for two shortly before the break to give England hope.

Steve Smith is still there, however, on 55 not out.

Michael: You’re a fantasist, Matthew, and that’s what I’ve always liked about you. Getting Smith out is essential, but I like how weird he is. So hopefully just bowl everyone around him for peanuts. 363 all out.

Marnus Labuschagne had quite the first session.

He began on 95, reached his first Ashes hundred with an edge, was caught behind off a no-ball on 102 and was eventually out for 103.

When that no-ball incident occurred the Aussies were whoooping in delight and I worried about England even more than I already do. It was more poor cricket but it hasn't cost them too much.

Australia are still in the driving seat - are we allowed to mention motorsport yet without people getting angry? - but England are hanging in there by their fingertips...

So as England take a break, so will I.

Matthew Henry is here to take you through the interval and the next session. About 20 minutes ago, this was his prediction: "Bowl them out for 350, score 500, win by an innings."

Let's see how that pans out. In a bit!

    Good morning early risers.

I wouldn't go as far as say England are back in it but in sweltering conditions they've had a better first session.

Marnus Labuschagne turned his overnight 95 into his first Ashes hundred but, having been caught behind off an Ollie Robinson no-ball on 102, was eventually out lbw to Robinson for 103.

Steve Smith has held firm, passing 50 for the 59th time in Tests, but two wickets in two overs in the run-up to the break have given England hope.

First Joe Root bowled Travis Head before Ben Stokes did the same to Cameron Green.

Alex Carey is unbeaten alongside stand-in captain Smith.

England got the ball fuller, challenged the bat and got the rewards. It could have gone either way when Labuschagne was caught off a no-ball but they held their ground.

Root has a knack of taking a wicket and Stokes bowled his heart out again. A good session for England.

If you offered that to England this morning they'd have taken it. They are clinging on a bit.

    Smith 55, Carey 5

Close! Carey prods outside off stump but the ball whizzes past the edge.

Well, that was another intriguing session. After the Robinson no-ball I really thought England were in for a day of complete pain. They have a glimmer of hope.

  13. Aus 302-5published at 115 overs

Root whizzes through an over and we have time for one more before the break.

I can't imagine Australia will be too pleased if it brings a wicket.

    Stokes is walking rather gingerly.

  15. Aus 301-5published at 114 overs

Stokes looks exhausted - hopefully just tiredness as opposed to injury. Maybe he's just hungry.

One more Root over to go before the break.

  16. Aus 300-5published at 113.3 overs

Alex Carey is just waiting for the short ball from Stokes, it's too predictable. He gratefully accepts and pummels it past a despairing Dawid Malan dive.

    Australia bring up their 300.

Just under 10 minutes until the break.

Just under 10 minutes until I can get a second coffee.

    We're in this together, England.

They just need to get rid of this man now. Easier said than done, of course.

England really need to get batting before it gets dark.

  20. Aus 294-5published at 112 overs

Having just bowled a new batter with a beauty that was full and clipping off stump, Stokes bowls a short ball to Alex Carey first up.

This is a huge chance for England to claw their way back in to the game. Stuart Broad said they needed a minimum of three wickets in the first session, and they've got that.
