So, what awaits us tomorrow? Obviously for England, they'll be hoping Root and Malan can bat all day.

Some contrasting thoughts between Stokes and Smith on the pitch there. England must be disciplined tomorrow.

And the bowlers will be wishing them to dig in for a day so that they can rest their legs. If Jimmy Anderson finds himself bowling again tomorrow, I do not think he will be best pleased.

England vice-captain Ben Stokes on TMS: "That's a great example of why it's called Test cricket, because it's tough. Tomorrow is going to be a good day for batting. Australia showed us once you get in, it's pretty hard to get out.

"We haven't batted that long and losing two wickets isn't ideal. We park everything, like we parked the result in Brisbane.

"Facing the new ball under lights is completely different. Tomorrow will be no lights. Australia showed how to capitalise if you get in.

"I'm fine. I'm edging over 30. I'm sure your body changes once you get over that mark, but I'm all good."

Stand-in Australia captain Steve Smith to ABC: "It's a pretty tough wicket. You really have to grind, back your defence and leave well, then cash in if they bowl anything loose.

"Another seven runs would have been nice, but it doesn't matter too much because of the position we're in.

"We still have a pretty new ball that will hopefully move around in the morning.

"There was some strange tactics at certain times. They bowled a fraction short with the first new ball, not hitting the stumps as hopefully our boys are able to do."

I'm not sure what to make of the use of "unfortunately" in that last sentence. Is that sincere?!

More from Labuschagne: "England had a heavy leg side field to try and stop us scoring - stop the runs in the day time and then strike at night.

"It’s easy to sit here and say that didn’t work but I gloved one down leg and if that gets taken the game might look a bit differently. We ended up going in unscathed to the night session and then I nicked one to Jos and he unfortunately dropped it."

Australia batter Marnus Labuschagne:"As we play more pink ball cricket there are going to be more strategies and tactics. Certainly one of the tactics is managing the night session and the tougher times to bat and easier times to bowl and vice-versa.

"If you can get through a day two, three or four down and then put the opposition in for that night session, you can really do damage.

"It certainly seems to be doing a bit more at night, but I felt like the wicket was doing plenty the whole game and that the bowlers were always in the game."

England will have to bat well to even get close to saving the follow-on, let alone getting close to Australia's total.

Nathan Lyon could be a handful for England on this pitch, too. We saw a couple from Root turn and bounce.

Ollie Robinson was the pick of England's bowlers with his extra height so it's not exactly a road, but if there is another collapse, the pitch will not be to blame.

England have to bat well. Australia have two inexperienced bowlers and Starc, who can be expensive. There will be runs to be had. England have to get in. Root and Malan batted well at Brisbane. This game isn't running along quickly.

There will also be questions around the batting - Rory Burns' place in particular seems up for debate.

It is not a bad pitch. Australia making nearly 500 proves that. The patience of Warner, Labuschagne and Smith was an example in how to bat on it.

England slipped to 12-2 in the blink of an eye before the lightning struck to save them.

England were exhausted. For Ollie Robinson to take 1-45 in these conditions is incredible. It's outstanding for someone new to Test cricket.

England's bowlers worked hard, there is no doubt about that. They gave it everything and they have had a very difficult two days.

Questions will still be asked about whether they've chosen the right bowling attack again, as Chris Woakes in particular offered very little.

Steve Smith added to England's pain with his 93, marking his return to captaincy in style before he was dismissed by Anderson.

Let's have a quick recap of the day's events. It's been a dramatic one, starting with Marnus Labuschagne's maiden Ashes century.

He eventually fell for 103 but not before Ollie Robinson gave us some standard no-ball drama.

There's the confirmation that play has been called off for the day. England will come back tomorrow with a very, very tough challenge ahead of them.

If that is the end of today's action, it's fair to say it's been Australia's day. Again.

England battled hard with the ball but they now trail by a mere 456 with eight wickets remaining.
