  6. What you've missedpublished at 07:07 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Just waking up? England haven't lost yet. They are six wickets down 20 minutes into the second session.

Ollie Pope was out in the second full over of the day, he nicked off to Mitchell Starc for four, and Ben Stokes lasted almost an hour before he was out for a 77-ball 12, lbw to Nathan Lyon on review.

But since then Jos Buttler and Chris Woakes have batted pretty nicely, seeing off more than more than 20 overs in resolute fashion. There haven't been too many scares.

The second new ball has just been taken, however, and there's a long way to go yet.

We're going into the biggest phase of this Test match. How long do we want to give them 15 overs...20 overs. No wicket lost with this new ball.

  8. Eng 154-6published at 80.3 overs

Jos Buttler gets a short one in the midriff from Mitchell Starc. The England wicketkeeper puffs out his cheeks and gets on with it, though.

This is where it's not as daunting a task as it would be if Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood were playing.

Mitchell Starc can be loose. Then you just have to get through Jhye Richardson and Michael Neser, who are inexperienced at this level. Then it's Nathan Lyon again.

Oh yeah I forgot about Cameron Green.

Still, let's get through this bit England.

  10. Eng 154-6published at 80.0 overs

Left-arm quick Mitchell Starc is given first dibs. Four slips in place, and a whole different ball game for England's batters now.

    Australia take the new ball.

  13. Eng 154-6published at 79.3 overs

Nathan Lyon has swapped ends to see if he can winkle one out before the new ball. Chris Woakes has a pretty solid defensive technique, though.

Three balls away from a fresh cherry for the Aussie quicks.

Steve Smith bowling leg-spin? Is this 2010?

  15. Eng 154-6published at 78.3 overs

Stand-in Aussie skipper Steve Smith, who began his Test career as leg-spinning all-rounder, has decided to bring himself into the attack.

He's getting plenty of encouragement from Carey, Warner et al.

  16. Eng 154-6published at 78.0 overs

Australia killing time before the new ball. Nathan Lyon rushes through an uneventful over over before Marnus Labuschagne continues.

He tosses a few up attempting to draw Jos Buttler into a false shot, but the England wicketkeeper is measured with his approach, playing when necessary and leaving well.

There was a massive appeal but not out. David Warner caught it and said it came off Jos Buttler's arm.

Jos Buttler attempts a sweep off Nathan Lyon and there's an appeal after David Warner claims a catch at leg-slip, but it's given not out and Australia decline to review

Was there a hint of glove, maybe? It just seemed to brush his forearm on the television replays.

Buttler punches one through the vacant mid-off region to pick up a couple of runs two balls later.
