Well, what a remarkable, and sometimes surreal, Test that was - and more disappointment for England on an already tough tour.

Australia have won by 275 runs to take a dominant 2-0 series lead in the Ashes, with three matches left to play.

Matthew Henry's report of how the hosts finally broke England's resistance is here.

    The scorecard is here.

The Test Match Special podcast will be available later here.

There are plenty of clips of all the action available on the BBC Sport website and app.

And there will be full highlights available on BBC iPlayer at 18:00 GMT.

We'll be back for the third Test in Melbourne, starting at 23:30 GMT on Christmas Day in the UK.

Catch you then. For now - farewell.

Final few words from Root on TMS: "You need to say 'over my dead body' and do the hard yards early on to get yourself in the game.

"That partnership from Jos and Woakesy was brilliant. It was over my dead boy stuff and we need more of that attitude, for five days and not just at the end of the game.

"Yesterday was a tough day for me but I feel a little better today and hopefully will be more myself in the next couple of days. I've been better."

It sounds like there have been arguments in the England team about the lengths they should be bowling.

More from Root on TMS: "We'll have to think about changes over the next couple of days, it's not the time to make emotional decisons

"We need to change what we're doing out on the field because it's not been good enough again.

Asked if the series is realistically over: "No. I'm still convinced we can come back. It's so frusting because we're so much better than what we've done so far.

"I know the plans are right, we just need to execute them better. We need to show what we did today - that attitude and hunger - we have to take it into the next three games because that what it takes here."

England have the players to compete. This isn't the hostile atmosphere you often get in Ashes series. Mitchell Starc had a laugh with Stuart Broad when he came out to bat.

Australia are not making England's batters feel uncomfortable with sledging.

Therefore it's purely a technical thing that England aren't scoring the runs. And they don't have the chance to play a warm-up, they're going to be facing the same bowlers - or Cummins and Hazlewood as well again - on Boxing Day.

More from Root on TMS: "I'm talking about everything - in the field as well, we have to be better and take our chances.

"We have to get guys going on and making big scores. It's been the main difference between the sides in this series so far. If you don't match at least what they do in reasonable conditions then you can't put overs in their bowlers' legs.

"We did't leave the ball well enough again after last wek - we need to get this right in the rest of this series."

I sense frustration from Root. I like the way he spoke about it.

To build big totals in Australia you do have to soak up pressure and put miles in bowlers' legs. Australia did that here.

This Test did mirror the match here four years ago, although England put Australia in that time.

Again we're talking about the bowling, but England should've scored 400 in their first innings and of course they fell short.

Unless there's an absolute miracle, then you are out of the game conceding that deficit.

I sound like a broken record but it's first innings runs that England need to work on.

Along with the personnel selected, the apparent divide between batters and bowlers apportioning blame seems to be a strong theme in the fallout from this defeat in Adelaide.

I would stick with Rory Burns, because Zak Crawley is the alternative and he's had no cricket so you can't tell what form he is in.

Ollie Pope is in trouble though. That was a good pitch to bat on and he got out twice in poor fashion.

Mark Wood should come back into the line-up but I'm not 100% who for. England did miss his pace in this Test. It then allows Ben Stokes to bowl the length that Cameron Green did and Stokes doesn't have to be the enforcer. That will suit England.

England will have to consider playing a frontline spinner if the wicket is in any way conducive to spin. So that's either off-spinner Dom Bess or Jack Leach - but can they pick him after he was targeted at Brisbane?

I'd like to see Ollie Pope keep his spot. He should have another go as the most promising young batter in England.

Everyone else has to put it right - they've been picked as the seven best batters, they've got in a mess and have to be the ones to get England out of it.

England should pick Leach - Melbourne is a bigger ground than Brisbane so it may be harder for Australia to attack him there. And Wood has to come back.

England need to win and they have to take chances.

Woakes' bowling hasn't threatened so he perhaps drops out. That would make a long tail but England may have to do it to have the best chance of winning.

What changes do England need to make to their side for the Boxing Day Test at the MCG?

  15. Postpublished at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

England captain Joe Root on Test Match Special: "We talk about what length to bowl all the time. We look at the data, what's going to hit the stumps on each surface. It's well communicated. But it's not always as simple as that and people get caught up in the emotion of the game.

"The guys did beat the edge a large amount but we have to be brave and bowl a bit fuller to create more chances.

"The most disappointing thing is we made the same mistakes again in this game as we did last week."

Here's the moment Australia wrapped up the Test to take a 2-0 lead.

  17. Postpublished at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

More from stand-in Australia captain Steve Smith: "Mitchell Starc bowled as well as he has for a long time, he led this attack well. He summed it up quickly that there wasn't a great deal of swing so he just wanted to bash a good length and hit some good areas - he did that as well as he has in his career.

"Part of our Covid protocols are going to level four from level three. We will do what we need to do. Fortunately we've been able to play cricket and entertain during this difficult period in people's lives and we'll keep doing that and stick to the protocols in place."

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on BT Sport

England seem a slow side to adjust to situations. They only seemed to see leaving the ball as a positive option in the second innings. The same with bowling fuller. These things should happen with instruction from the coach ahead of the game.

Joe Root would not have said that publicly unless he wanted to get that message across to his bowlers.

Joe Root sounded angry. He said it with venom that they bowled too short and adjusted too late.

The thing that would frustrate me would be if that wasn't communicated to the bowlers. You'd hope it would be.

There has to be an element of acceptance that Australia bowled fuller and got more outside edge.

When you're asked to bowl first your mentality is a bit more defensive than when you decied to bowl first. In that mindset you can bowl a little bit shorter and that's why the Australians left more on length.
