    Ah.

Ollie Robinson is out. It's an edge to Steve Smith at slip. Nathan Lyon round the wicket. It keeps going across Robinson and Smith takes the grab low to his right.

The last time England batted out for a draw in Australia, excluding a game in Brisbane in 1998-99 when rain curtailed the last session, was Adelaide in the 1990-91 series.

I've just seen a text from Jasper in Verwood saying a power cut would be pretty handy right now. Chris Silverwood is heading to the floodlit pylon with a pair of pliers. Cameron Green goes past the edge of Jos Buttler. The natural light is fading fast.

People say it's the hope that gets you, but it's the hope that sustains you as well.

  6. Eng 177-7published at 08:30 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

This is the ridiculousness of Test cricket. There is, essentially, nothing happening. And yet everything is happening. One team wants nothing to happen, while another wants lots to happen. Compelling.

Buttler has now been England's best performer in two of their four innings! We can't drop him.

Here come Cameron Green, a giant who still carries the chubby cheeks of a man who hasn't grown into his body. It's the 100th over of the innings. Buttler has faced 171 balls.

Now five men around the bat as Lyon bowls to Robinson. There's the shot we always thought would come - a slog sweep. It goes all along the ground to mid-wicket. Not really what you want to see, though.

If Australia would have taken that early nick from Jos Buttler there would have been question marks over his place in the side. Instead he's given England some respectability. Cricket is a game of fine margins.

Long shadows lie across the Adelaide Oval. It's a reminder that England will still have a period under lights to get through if they are to pull off something incredible. Steve Smith directs traffic, with fielders hurrying here and there. Buttler plays Starc with a straight bat.

Buttler's great if he is given one plan - to block or to hit. He seems unable to build a genuine Test match innings. I hope this doesn't blind people to think he is a Test match batsman.

I think the plan will be to bat normally until 10 overs to go, then see where they are. Stuart Broad to give it a thrash. One more ticks by.

Jon Hollis: The required rate is approaching 7.5 an over so, unless Buttler really gets going, England may need to settle for a draw.

  15. Eng 174-7published at 08:11 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

Buttler has decided he isn't going to expose Robinson to Starc. There's a comfortable single on offer, but Buttler turns it down. Starc is round the wicket, creating the angle that struck a bullseye on Joe Root. Buttler comes through unscathed, in every sense.

Jos Buttler has done well. He's dropped anchor. He almost has to take the majority of the seam bowling and leave the tail to see off Nathan Lyon. England have at least shown some application today.

Here's Nathan Lyon, who will no doubt test Robinson's powers of self-control. Off-spinner to off-spinner. Four men around the bat. Robinson comes through without alarm.

England have only lost one wicket in the last 37.2 overs. If England lose only one in the next 37.2 overs they'll only have 16 balls to survive after that!

I thought it looked quite close. Potentially height is an issue as it hit him on the knee roll. It was probably worth a review.

  20. Eng 173-7published at 08:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 December 2021

There's a trench on the crease where the batters have been taking guard. Jos Buttler's back foot teeters on the edge. He's hit on the pad by Starc, but that always looked like it pitched outside leg.
