The roar as Scott Boland picked up his first Test wicket was something special. A hometown favourite who has spent so many days toiling at this ground for Victoria, finally getting the chance for Australia. And the Melburnians got to celebrate it twice: once at the initial decision and once after the DRS.

I can only assume he reviewed it because he thought it hit the bat before the pad. Wood didn't look happy with the decision.

    Wood lbw b Boland 6 (Eng 141-7)

The ball clearly struck the pad before Mark Wood's bat and the ball-tracking had it going on to hit middle stump. He's on his way back to the England dressing room.

Scott Boland has his first Test wicket.

It took umpire Paul Reiffel an age to give it out.

  6. Player reviewpublished at 05:20 Greenwich Mean Time 26 December 2021

Mark Wood is struck on the pad by full delivery from Scott Boland. He's given out on field but has immediately reviewed it. Was there some bat involved?

  7. Eng 141-6published at 55.3 overs

Jonny Bairstow manages two bites of a banana brought out to the middle in between overs.

He quickly regains his focus to Scott Boland, working him round the corner to get Mark Wood on strike.

There's a big thing made about batting big and scoring 500 over here. I think 350 is enough in Australia if you make them in good time and have a decent bowling attack.

  9. Eng 140-6published at 54.0 overs

Another bouncer from Pat Cummins and this time Mark Wood is able to get over the top of it. Although he doesn't go full blooded so it's only a couple of runs added. He's holding his own here, in support of Jonny Bairstow.

Jonny Bairstow is showing a lot of fight which has been missing from the top order.

  11. Eng 138-6published at 54.3 overs

Jonny Bairstow is 27 runs from 64 balls. England's tail needs to wag, either through gritty defence or by playing shots, and give him sort of opportunity to boost the total.

A short ball from Pat Cummins to Mark Wood who attempts to hook it, but is unable to make contact.

Bowlers like to get in the action straight away on debut, and Scott Boland is experiencing the 'G' like nothing he's seen before.

Cummins is fielding next to Boland and having a chat with him and speaking to him about his field.

Scott Boland, wicketless on debut so far, replaces Nathan Lyon but Jonny Bairstow seems fairly organised until the fourth ball of the over.

Bairstow gets an inside edge which misses the stumps by a whisker and races away to the boundary for four.

A let-off for the England man.

Jim French: I'm trying to find TMS Ashes coverage on the BBC Sounds app - which category is it under? Comedy or True Crime?

  16. Eng 134-6published at 52.5 overs

Pat Cummins arrows the ball into Mark Wood's pad before he spins on his heels and appeals for lbw. It's given not out. Will he review? After a brief conflab with the slip cordon Australia decline the chance to take it upstairs.

    Probably slipping down leg.

Glen Meskell-Brocken: Perhaps Joe Root will now come out and admit it is the batting which is the issue with this England team and not the bowlers. Just awful, perhaps the worst ever batting performance in Oz.

  18. Eng 133-6published at 52.1 overs

Pat Cummins with a spicy delivery for Mark Wood, which strikes his bottom hand on the handle off the bat. Wood is able to keep it down and he and Jonny Bairstow scramble a quick single.

  19. Eng 132-6published at 51.5 overs

Nathan Lyon continues his his over after tea and Mark Wood is off the mark from his third ball with square drive for three.

Thanks Ffion. If you're just wiping the sleep out of your eyes, it's been a familiar tale of woe for England's batters in the wee small hours.

Jonny Bairstow probably has to counterattack here to give England half a chance of posting something semi (well quarter) competitive.
